I couldn't find an answer anywhere so I thought I'd ask. I am replacing my main bearings in my 7 bolt and I used the "cotter pin in the oiling holes method" to replace the uppers, except for the center bearing (the one with wings). There are no oiling holes in the crank for that bearing. How would I remove and replace it?

i just had to replace the thrust bearing in my car, i pushed it over with a thin metal ruler. Then grabbed it with locking pliers against the crank and rolled it out. But make sure u roll it a few times to get it completely clean and greased, if you have an air compressor use that to blow air around the top half.

Care to elaborate on this? Particularly, on how you're measuring clearances?

Here's the FSM pages:

I flattened the end of a cotter pin so it looks like a "T" and then put it in the oiling hole on the crank and turned the crank. The pin pushes the bearing out. Then I just did that in reverse to install the bearings. I only measured the clearances on the bottom bearing. Should I be measuring the top too?

Well it was actually my first full rebuild and I ordered standard size bearings not knowing the crank was machined. So I found out after I started it...

You didn't check clearances or anything? You are likely going to have some damage in there. I don't see this lasting very long.

This is how a lot of DSMs wind up in the junk heap at the junk yard.

Do this the right way and quit taking shortcuts or you're going to blow this engine.

Pull the engine, measure what you NEED and order the right bearings. Install everything out of the car so you don't have to take shortcuts. Pulling an engine is not difficult. In fact, what it sounds like you're doing is more difficult than just pulling the engine and doing it right the first time.

You and and a strong friend can safely remove the engine, its really not that hard. Heres how we did it on my junker car - Me and my friend disconnected everything, removed the head and manifolds, dropped the engine accessories then used a jack with a soft wooden block and just smoothly guided it down and slid it under the drivers side. edit- We left the drivers side motor mount on there till the end.

Now I own an engine lift :)
