I was wondering if anyone here knew what the main bearings are made of,, is there copper in there? WTF

i wish thats what happened, i took my car to the shop, and they told me that my pistons where bad, and then they told me that they could fix it for $1300, then all the sudden the car wont hold timing. then he said i had to remove the balance shaft, k sounds fun. then he calls back and says my main bearings are trashed and i should get a new engine, but i still owe $1300 for the pistons.. umm did i forget to mention that the only paperwork they have is a napkin with my name and number,, no signitures or anything. but he told me that he could see the copper in the main bearings, but he told me before that is guy thought they were alittle worn.

Here ya go, this is one of my main bearing that went bad.

jesus that thing is ugly :barf: what kinda oil do you run in it? looks like cheap penzoil either that or thats burnt oil.....
What do you mean Cheap Penzoil? Penzoil has been around forever and has proved itself over and over again as well. A long time ago, sure there was a lot of difference in oils, but these days, with qualitly conltrol and mandatory specs for oil processing, basically oil is oil. Disagree if you wish, I've seen it all, and it all works, and it all doesn't work.

I can't tell is there copper in there? Im just starting to really doubt the credability of this shop... i have plans on taking them to court to get my baby back...

They charged you $1,300 for PISTONS?

I can see $1,300 for a rebuild, but that would included new bearings all the way around, new gaskets, pistons, rings, etc.
I'd definitely do some investigation into this.
But yes, bearings are copper, coated with typically aluminum or beryllium.

so $1300 is high for pistons? and im not totaly sure they were using new rods.. and since i wasnt given a written estamate i cant break it down... prices for product vs labor

1300 for pistons is ridiculous!:notgood: You can get a forged set of ross pistons (top of the line) for 500 :thumb: . Now 1300 for an entire rebuild is an ok price... But definately not for pistons. How do i put this nicely? You got jew'd....Sorry bro.

well i havent given money yet, since my damn car still doesn't run,, like i said, i think we gotta go to court for this.. so i think in the end they will end up being screwed...
