Hello I got a 98 Mist eclipse rs and I will be doing a gasket replacement kit. I know a few things and the things I need to get the job done and I been reading about it's best to replace the head bolts right? And what bolts are we talking about? I know the valve cover had 8 well that what I counted on mine am I missing any? Reason why I ask is because on ebay I'm seeing bolts that comes with like 13 of the same size and some come with shorter ones with long ones. If anyone can help that be great what I'm needing hi know is what bolts should be replaced and what I am seeing on ebay am I getting extra bolts or? Giving a link to the right ones from ebay or something wold help the most thanks.

Ok thanks but I know that already just not sure wut bolts should be replaced when people say I should replace the bolts and I'm just not sure what bolts they are referring to and I am assuming it's the bolts that you have to undo on the valve cover and not the ones inside to get to the head that where I'm confused right now. Like I said I have seen bolts I'm guessing for the valve cover but it comes with like 13 and some with a few short ones and I'm just not sure what to get of I should replace the bolts. It could be the bolts to get to the head or the bolts for the cover I don't know LOL. Sorry this my first car and have been doing some reading and just still confusing

I have also read that some people had to cut off two to three threads in order for it to fit I'm sure I can go to a shop but I only have one car or I could get the exact measurements and have it cut before I do the job I don't have the equipment to cut it down myself it could be great of I got pointed towards one that are absolutely going to fit without any alterations or anything like that.

Before you go chopping the bolts.... is the head damaged or anything? Or are people just telling you right off the bat to replace them? Are you boosted or planning to put a Turbo on the car in the near future?
I would love a turbo but as you may already know ppl say its pointless because the cost would be high and might as well save up and get a GSX right now I'm just trying to repair and tune up this car pretty much flip it and resell it for the car I want and I know a turbo in my car would be possible but it would take a lot of time and money. The head don't look damaged I do have a oil leak and did some reading and it really sounds like the head so I was just going to get a gasket set and replace them all or alot of them most likely all than that's when I read about the bolts being replaced I got the car from a teenager and really didn't give me info on what he already did or didn't so I'm doing it all so I know it's all been done and when it comes down to resell I can show what's been done and when at what miles ect

This look about right what the short ones considering how the valve cover dips down but I only counted 8 three on the outside and two in the middle? The ones I looked at looks right too but some comes with all long ones ansld some don't and comes with like 13 bolts. That's why I was asking if that give you a few extra because I cant see me useing all 13 of them.

You don't need to replace the valve cover bolts if your replacing a valve cover gasket. If that's the oil leak your talking about on top of the head. If you are talking about replacing a head gasket I recommend getting a manual. The timing belt needs to come off and if that is not done properly you will bend valves.

Yes I have the book and know it will take a few weeks or so to get everything and read up on it a lot and I know a lot already. Yes I will be replacing the head gasket along with the valve cover gasket just to get it all done even if it don't need to be replaced that's what a gasket set is right? Lol pulse it's a 98 and I do not know whats been done and when.

Unless the head is bad or has a blown head gasket there is no need to replace the head gasket. Doing a head right is a lot of work. It not just pulling the head and throwing a new gasket in it. I would start with a compression check and Leak down test and go from there.[/QUOTE
Well I guess it wouldn't hurt to do a UV test first I just don't want to get the UV test kit and still having to do the head anyways you know? I may just do the UV test anyways but I'm 98% sure it is the Head but I also like to be 100% sure..... And the only way I think I could get 100% sure is the test any tips on doing a UV test? Like is it best to let the ran run and warm up or just toss it right in? Reason I ask is its been cold here under 30°.

Uv test? You mean block test? You can rent the tool and the fluid is cheap. There is instructions that come with tool but yes motor needs to be warmed up a bit.

Block test is easy and that will give you a definite answer if your head gasket is blown
No I mean putting UV dye in the oil I think that way would be the easiest. I will be getting the kit today and I'll let you know what I find I have no idea what a block test is

Sounds like your looking for an oil leak. After all the years working on cars it is very uncommon for a head gasket to leak oil. Most likely its just a valve cover gasket getting down to the head gasket area. I highly recommend a compression check to see how the health of the motor is. It would suck that you spend all this time fixing oil leaks and the motor has low compression.

For a stock 420 just go to the parts store and ask them for a head bolt set. Thats why we have parts stores. Also the issue ppl have that have to shorten the bolts was a factory defect from the early 420a cars that 1 or 2 of the bolts bottomed out before torque out and caused chronic hg issue. it was resolved by the 97 model and any new head bolt set you buy now will be revised as well. No need to cut bolts anymore.
You should have a shop perform what is called a block to determine if your engine's hg is blown or not.

I have bought a lot of things off ebay but I wouldn't trust the head bolts nor head gasket off of there. IF you plan on doing any upgrades like bigger turbo, I would suggest since you have everything apart I would put headstuds in it from APR and get the factory Mitsubishi head gasket. JMO
