A curb attacked my Legacy tire yesterday. The car only has 8k miles on it. Who thinks thats enough miles to have to buy a set of all 4 tires? At $170 per tire, if I can get away with replacing just one I'd sure be happy. :notgood:

I would check tread depths. New cars come with tires that wear out uber fast. 10-12k. So they might be getting really worn already.

No. As long as you can't see cords you are ok. I worked for Firestone for over 2 years and saw LOTS of those tires on the road.

On a new car I would be weary about driving it with those tires. But on a BRAND NEW car...I would think about driving it like that. If it were me, I would bite the bullet and buy new tires. I dont think warranties cover negligence. Just my .02

If the other three are fine then just replace the one. You can look at them and make the decision with no problem. Or when you go to get the one replaced the tire shop can let you know if any of the others have gone to crap.

That's not the issue. On newer awd cars, EVO, STI, WRX, Audi's, if there is more than 2/32nds tread difference all tires must be replaced if one needs replaced due to diameter differences.

I see. However the Diameter difference is very small. It wouldn't hurt the car. It may not be choice, but it definitely wouldn't destroy the drivetrain.

So basing it off this, I either buy a set of 4, or I keep the current tire on and hope I don't have a blowout?

Incorrect. I had to take a specific class for this as Discount Tire, Firestone, and everyone else was just replacing 1 or 2 tires at a time and customers were making claims for t-case, transmission or rearend failures left and right. Especially when people mix and match brands. My Bridgestone 225-45-17 G019 tires have almost .60" more diameter than my old 225-45-17 BFGs.

I know I sound like a cheap ass right now (i am a dsmer), but what do you think my odds are with keeping that tire on there? Is it really THAT bad?

I'd check all of the local tire shops for used tires in good shape before I'd rule anything else out.

A long time ago we had just installed a set of (4) brand new Firestones on the Ford that pulled my bike trailer to the races, when my dad was using the truck to haul some wood and cut the sidewall down on one of the brand new tires. We found a Dunlop the same size and nearly the same tread at a local tire shop that had about 80% tread life left, and it ended up wearing WAY better than the Firestones....when the Firestones had finally worn out, the Dunlop still had 30% or better.

If not, I'd use some black RTV silicone to glue down that little flapper, and possibly have a tire shop flip the tire so the bad spot is on the inside to prevent further accidental damage.

As Justin said you could try to silicoln it down. But shouldn't be a problem at all.

Thanks a bunch guys. Worst possible time for me to have an unexpected expense. If I can get another 5-10k out of it Ill just replace them all then.
