Removal of the oil filter housing.

I need to take off my oil filter housing.I thought it was simple and took off three bolts and one on timing cover but apparently one is hidden under cover..? Do I have to remove the balancer pulley or just the lower timing cover. Also to remove the balancer I assume you have to take off the four bolts and the center bolt.Will putting the car in fifth negate the need to jam the flywheel to stop it from turning.I tried to turn it off today and thought car was in fifth but maybe it was reverse or fourth but it still turned.I turned the engine counterclockwise a half to maybe full turn.Then I just read in haynes a big caution not to turn the engine counterclockwise.Did I just bend valves or something bad..that will really suck bit time.

I was able to take it off by removing the harmonic balancer and 3 bolts from the case. It allowed me to slide my rachet under the case.
