Hi all I'm in the middle of trying to remove the Oil Filter Housing but I'm stuck and need your help desperately. I removed the 3 long bolts in the housing and one short bolt but the housing still wont come off. Am I missing a bolt somewhere? Why wont this thing come off?

Can anyone explain to me how to remove it or point me to a site/thread that has good instructions? I tried searching but didn't come up with any USEFUL answers. PLEASE HELP.

if your talking about the oil cooler. which is right where the oil filter screws on then you have to remove the screw itself which is a 15/16 socket and it will come right off

No not just the cooler. I have to remove the oil bracket housing. The housing that bolts right on the block.

If it is the first time it has been apart the gasket can (and normley does) glue it self to the housing. Take a candy hammer and rap on the oil filter pad it should brake loose. Are you trying to do this in or out of the car.

The housing and engine are in the car. An so it the lower timing belt cover. I think 95% sure there is another bolt concealed behind the timing belt cover. Can anyone verify this? If so, what's the easiest way to get behind the timing belt cover to remove this 4th bolt on the oil filter bracket (housing)???

You are correct, there is one bolt hiding behind the lower timing cover, good lord knows why they did it this way, but you will have to either remove the lower timing cover or cut a hole in the lower timing cover to take it out.

Yeah that's what I did. I removed the crank pulley and 2 belts. The I cut a small hole in the lower timing cover and the bolt was right behind it. I unscrewed the bolt and the oil filter housing came out.

Wow you guys are lazy. I'd much rather spend the extra time removing and reinstalling the lower timing cover than cutting into the cover, and risking the chance of debris getting to the timing belt.

More than likely you're only going to need to remove the housing one time, so just spend the extra time and do it right without hacking up the cover.

Removing the cover involves a lot of removing of other parts. This may be lazy but has the advantage of being quick and easy.

I used a hooked knife heated up by a blow torch and made 4 nice clean cuts with no debris at all. Worked great actually. Anyways. I'll post pics tomorrow.

Also, I just spend 3 months working on my car and finally got it 99.9999% done when the oil housing issue came up. I really didn't feel like un-doing all the hard work I put in the last few month. It may sound lazy to you but I'm tired and I miss my car and want it back asap.

Cheers,

I under stand, but I don't mean debris as in debris from when you did the hacking of the cover.

I mean debris, as in when your driving, and a small rock gets kicked up, and by the graces of god, the rock bounces around and somehow makes it into the timing belt area from the little hole or cut you made in the cover. Timing belt breaks, valves meet pistons, $$$ goes bye bye.

If anything now would be the perfect time to make sure you do it correctly as you said it just got put back together, you you know how to do it, and know how to do it fast, and it isn't caked in oil and grease yet.

Actually, the piece that I cut out (with a hot knife hook) filled the hole very nicely. I'll be putting that piece back in, most likely silicon or something (haven't figured that out yet). So the hole will be plugged up. Because it's a new (built by a shop) engine, the inside of the timing cover is all clean and not greasy yet so it should be ok.

BELIEVE me, I would not leave an open hole right where my timing belt is :p.
Thanks, for the advice anyways. I'll take a few snap shots and post back here when it's all done.

when i did mine recently i just undid all the bolts holding the lower timing cover and was able to bend it enough to get a shroty socket on there and get the last bolt out...did not have to cut or trim the cover at all. Hope that helps anyone

wheres the pics? i want to trim mine, im thinking about doing a round hole big enough to get to the bolt behind the cover, then use some kind of plug to cover the hole. i just need a good idea of where to cut.

thanks
