Just curious what radiator overflow reservoir some people are using with the short route piping with big front mounts? Also, where are you mounting your overflow reservoirs? I'm currently using a greddy oil catch can for mine but might be too small. Any advice would be helpful.

I am running a small generic overflow I purchased from Pepboys... most auto parts stores will have these.. I have mine sitting in between the intake and the passenger side headlight.. Its kinda temporary thing till I can find a place to mount it...

I know other people that have relocated there overflows down in the space where the SMIC was... you can buy new lines if you need to extend them...

mlopez,
What kinda damn intercooler do you have? That thing is friggin huge. Also, you ran the piping up through as opposed to the stock way. Do you still have AC? I'm looking for a nice fmic after I fix my motor and would prefer to run it the shorter way. But I want to keep AC.

Sorry to jack your thread...had to ask though.

I have the AGP intercooler kit. The front mount installation has nothing to do with the AC location. You should be able to retain your ac. And yes I do have AC but not for long.

Ok. I have a slight problem with my overflow bottle. It's to large. My intercooler piping is blocking it from clipping into the stock location, and the air filter is going to be sitting almost where the bottle is. Previously, I was using a simple water bottle with a hole in the cap zip-tied to the radiator hose. That's got to go. What are your idea's? I don't want to just have the coolant drip off into the street. I had thought about relocating my battery and putting it in that area, but then the bottle would be higher than the radiator cap, or does that matter any from vacuum and pressure?

In most FMIC's you need to relocate your coolant overflow bottle. Where's a good place (not too hot)? I was thinking of where the SMIC used to be.

any ideas/pics?

Yep, I moved mine where the SMIC use to be.
It works fine and there is plenty of room.
I didn't use the stock bottle though.
Mine came with a new one.
Good luck

Other than danger from melting on the exhaust, it won't much care how hot it is. It also won't care what shape it is, or who made it. If you move the battery, that's also a good spot.

I know somebody on this sites going to call me stupid, but ive been "stuffing" it by my intake filter and keeping the hood latch unlocked, but semi closed...

I was wondering why my a/f gauge was reading rich, and after 5 seconds of thinkin i realised it's cuz IM BLOCKING MY FILTER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL :notgood:

Either way, i used the stock bottle, longer tube, 1 smic bolt and a zip tie to put it in the smic spot...works for now i guess.

Can some one explain to me how the coolant reservoir in our cars work? I know that coolant is sent in the reservoir to help cool? I'm just asking because i took my car for a hard run and when i got back i let me car sit for 3min then i shut it off. I went to look into the reservoir and their was coolant all the way to the cap of the bottle! Is this normal?

Ehh not so much to help cool..pretty much to keep the radiator full at all times & keep the coolant from spilling onto the street.

It's an overflow container..basically an expansion tank. It allows for expansion of the coolant when the engine is warm, rather than just spilling the coolant all over the street.
It pretty much enables the radiator to be consistently full, regardless of temperature.

Since a vacuum is created in the cooling system when the engine cools, the vacuum causes some of the coolant in the reservoir to be sucked back into the system. Because a cooling system with an expansion tank is virtually a closed system, the coolant can flow between the system and the expansion tank as it expands & contracts. This way, no coolant is lost.

That's it in a nutshell.

Running your car hard raises the coolant's temperature..higher the temperature, the higher the 'pressure' inside the radiator. The more pressure in the radiator, the more coolant it pushes into the overflow reservoir..that's why it was full after that hard run.

Now you know.

Well said by a_scobel. Its not really overflowing just being moved around so to say, by pressure and vacum. The overflow is just a storage unit for it to overflow to, or reffill the coolant system.

After you replace the cap and find that the problem has not gotten better and may have actually gotten worse, start searching for threads on "pushing coolant." You have my sympathy in advance if this is the case.

Im just curious on where you guys are going to get a coolant overflow bottle for first gens? I know dejontool sells the relocation kit but im kinda looking for a cheap way out and i want to go to the junk yard and find one that fits. If you have a chance could you also post a pic on how you guys mounted it.

thanks in advance
