salmon arm,
I borrowed a set of 272 cams....I got the stock cams reground to the 272 profile.I know i have to shim the lifters but is there anything else major i should know about? From what you guys have heard/experienced how do reground cams work. Thanks :)

They are junk in my oppinion. Reground cams are stock cams welded and reground. Depending on how good the weld job the lobes can flake off and trash the engine. Not a good idea

^ exactly, it all depends on who does the work. That applies to the good end of the spectrum as well.
Isky cams does great regrinds, and I've never seen one of Isky's regrinds fail in my life.

I don't think that these cams were hardwelded and reground.... they copied that profile of the 272's onto the stock cams... the stock cams are much smaller now but have got the exact same ratios as the 272's, so i think that all i have to do is shim the lifters 80 thou!!! does anyone know if there is anything else that i should be worrying about, or should do????? thanks :dsm: :thumb: :dsm:

While welding cams is done on badly worn lobes when parts are not available it is more common to grind the heel and ramps to the specifications desired. This way you minimise disturbing the hardness treating where the greatest wear occurs which is close to max lift.

I'm sure you can find all kinds of welders out there but I would have no problems accepting the advice of any of the big name grinders who have been around even longer than me. These people are not going ot risk their reputation turning out sloppy work, sure I've seen what you mention on domestic iron but never from a reputable shop.

Cheers,
GTM

I thought the most wear is going to occur on the onramp, not the point of max lift? Every set of stock cams I've seen have had dimples on the onramp from the rockers.

About the only regrinds I would use are ones where the stock lobe is ground down to the shaft and a completely New billet lobe was welded on and ground to identical spec of the "donor" cam.
