Rebuilt block smoking !!

So today I pick up my car after the bottom end spun a bearing and I had it rebuilt. I have new bearings, crank , pistons, ring , gaskets. So I had to drive the car to the body shop. I babbied the car the whole way , going through the gears , no boost , and not going higher than 3k rpms. The car smells like its burning oil , when i was sitting at a light i saw smoke coming from the hood and the temp gauge went up , but then went down. So im totally lost , broke and confused as to why my engine is smoking.I'm going to be bringing the car back on saturday to the mechanics after i pick it up from the body shop. Any ideas guys, on why this is happening. (do rebuilt blocks smoke?) i'd greatly appreciate it.

assuming the rebuild was done correctly,smoke coming from the engine could just be grease/dirt/oil burning off when the engine heats up wich is normal,it will go away,also the engine will burn a little oil(internally,and only visible through the tail pipe as blue smoke) untill the rings seat after the break in period.As for your temp going up, keep an eye on it,this is normally not related to a proper rebuild and is a sign of a different problem.

When you say the temp was going up; how far did it go up? My cars temp normally goes up a tad when at a stop for a couple minutes (because there's no air flowing through the radiator), but goes back down a bit after cruising. Like t25fury said, the smoke/oil smell could be from the mechanics greasy ass hands touching exhaust components, or dripping oil somewhere, etc. But keep an eye and an ear on the motor. The very second you see/hear something wrong, shut it off, call the mechanic and bi*** up a storm.

I don't understand why, but every engine I rebuilt had strange temperature fluctuation the first time it was run / driven after being assembled. The problem seems to remedy itself after a few drive cycles, but it sure makes you nervous seeing the temp gauge rising with no explaination as to why. I'm always careful to fully bleed all air from the cooling system before starting the engine.

That doesn't explain the smoking problem, however.

sounds like you have air in the cooling system at it wasn't burped correctly. the smoke is oil, paint, or something like that burning off.
