So i really need to get my long back together I got a quote from a popular vendor.
I have a ready to go head already done up. Wiseco pistons, eagle rods, clevite bearings, water and oil pump,MLS head gasket, arp head&main studs,OEM timing belt and pulleys,BS eliminator.Block was already cleaned and bored and crank turned. Will also be getting fidanza adjustable cam gears. What do you think about the price I was quoted.

Quote
Check block work $150
Deck head surface $75
Check line bore $75
Assemble shortblock $400
Assemble longblock/timing components $500
Misc bolts and rear amin seals $30

It sounds a little high to me. But I do usually get good pricing so it might be resonable???

Yeah, that's a bit expensive, in my opinion. When I had my engine work done last year, I went to a shop that had a good reputation. They were more expensive than many of the other shops, but I knew I was getting quality work. And this is what I spent:

$155 - Bore & hone w/ torque plate
$120 - Deck block
$120 - O-ring block
$175 - Assemble shortblock
$25 - Check align hone
$60 - Degrease block
$50 - Assembly-clean block
$50 - Micropolish crank journals
$30 - Hanging pistons
$35 - Install new freeze plugs and b-shaft bearings
$60 - Resurface head

Got two engine stands and a torque wrench, I've atv motors before with great success its just the bearings that make me nervous. i don't have and way to measure clearances and I don't wanna tear this thing back apart in a month.

Yeah, I think the prices you were quoted are kind of high also. But sometimes you get what you pay for. I would just do some research and read up plenty on building motors and give it a go yourself. But can you really afford to make a mistake and pay to do it all over again?

I did all the assembly myself, and the machine shop did machining and such. Here's how mine worked out, and I'm completely and totally satisfied:

Shortblock
$45 - Vat clean block
$80 - Bore and hone cylinders
$64 - Recondition rods + ARP rod bolts
$20 - Polish crank

Head
$250 - Valve job and resurfacing
$60 - New guides + install

I was also wondering about this. I picked up a bare 6bolt block and was planning on doing the rebuild myself but If i can get a complete assembly of my short block for a reasonable price why not? Ive never assembled a motor before but I am totally amp'd on doing it myself just to prove I can do it. I am trying to get all the pieces together and just spend a good weekend putting it together. I have the bare block which I need to get hot tanked and deckeId 6bolt big rods dont know what pistons im gonna go with, Probably wiseco .020 over. And I also just picked up a 6bolt crank which I need to have checked out too.
I am starting with a bare block and I mean bare. Can someone give me a list of parts that I need to make it a complete short block ready for a head to be bolted on?

Getting prices will be entirely dependent on your location. If you can make a 150-200 mile trip sometimes you can save twice the money than what it costs you in gas. Locally I was looking at $500 for short block work with no assembly. This whole region is a rip-off for imports with all the Ford/Chevy junkies.
