So I just talked to Greeley Automotive Machine here in Colorado.

I asked them what would the cost be to build me a motor(I dont have a garage or i'd do it myself):

Block:
Clean $65
Bore and Hone $100
Deck $65
Ross Pistons on Manley Rods $793
Assemble shortblock $200

Head:
Clean and Surface head $40
5 angle valve job $225 (175 for 3 angle)
Installing New Valve seals Included

he said it would be a grand total of 1520.63
I thought that was a killer deal.

I planned on getting the SBR Manley rod on Ross combo for 763.00 but he said if I bought it from them it would only be 793 and I wont have to pay for shipping....
Now that I'm thinking about it I will have to pay taxes.
He did guarentee me getting the CORRECT pistons to fit...oh how tough I know but its that little sence of security.

How does this all compare to prices other people are getting from machine shops?

I told him what I needed, he priced it all out for me and I added it all up.

Thats actually a pretty good deal for all the work done. I'd make sure you completely trust this guy to assemble everything though...I wouldn't trust just anyone to make sure all the clearances are correct. Does he offer any kind of warrenty?

Most 5 angle valve jobs aren't really 5 angle's. I would just get the 3 angle and save the money for something else.

Make sure you get the head and block resurfaced to the proper finish for the head gasket you are using.

Also try to find a torque plate that you could rent for the bore and hone. Without it, the cylinders will be out of round after the head is torqued down. It's a good idea to have them torque the mains down as well.

Other than that the prices look great.

Ryan Larsen of turbogarage.com has a torque plate. Blue Oval has one as well. We payed for one and they bought it from us. Geddes in colorado springs has one and we have had great luck with it.

Not any real need for it though. We just do it to our race blocks for peace of mind. GAM, that is a great price. Bruce will take care of you. He machines and helps with the highest dynoed dsm so far in the state. 810whp. At one time he was assembling Scott's motors, but Scott does his own now. All the ones I mentioned in the other thread should be trustworthy. They will get it done right.

Steven

Steven I disagree about the use of a torque plate. I've measured with and without the torque plate and it's a significant difference.

That really is a killer deal, especially if he's a good machinist. I've seen at least two machinists who can't seem to make holes round... And I got charged more than that.

Well, they've been recommended as ONE of the best in the city. I might try Geddes from the springs too. I would have to make a drive just to get them my parts.
Sorry for the slow reply, i'm in the process of building a computer cus our old one broke and Newegg is pissin me off with their deals bullshit. Anywho, they said they were a ross and manley dealer. I still wanna compare around the state a bit more.

Anyone from the Springs heard of Laniers Speed shop? We took the Corvettes 383(350 bored to 383 with a 400ci crank. Kinda like the 2.3 to us...) there and my dad swears he ####ed it up. Says there was still a slight vibration. Thought i'd ask.

Thats a killer deal for all that.I know guys that charge that just to race prep the head.

Thats not a bad price. I had a sho phere in Phoenix arizona want $1k just to bore and hone the block for my stroker build.

I got in touch with a guy my buddy uses to build the motors in his sand rails. Turns out he races super modifieds and was a postal machinist for 30+ years. He charged me $100.00 for the complete job(minus assembly, I wont trust anyone but myself with that). HE cleaned, bored, honed, decked, checked all clearances and even powdercoated my block for me. He also did a 3 angle valve job with all new valves, guides and seals for $250.00 including parts!! He did great work at an excellent price.

I always try to find someone that has been used by someone I know. That way I know things will be done right.
