Well i was driving around tuning, (no more than 20 minutes of driving) and i was in mid cruise (60mph) and then out of nowhere my car just feels like the brakes started coming on, Droped me down to 45mph pretty fast... Thinking quickly i got off on the exit within 5 seconds of this happening... Thinking it was my motor i shut the engine off while cruising still at 35mph and right before i was about to turn into a drive way to get off the exit, my rear tires just lock up at 30-35mph and give me a nice little 10foot tire mark... The people behind me saw what happened and pulled over to try and help out... So After we tried pushing the car while not in gear and without the brake on it would not budge.... Luckily a good samaritan with a truck had a tow rope and tows me out of the exit way, during this the rear tires do not budge at all so he drags me about 50 feet into a parking lot.... I wait for the AAA flatbed to show up and in the process of him hooking up the winch and pulling my car up the flatbed i hear a pop sound and then all 4 tires start rolling again... He tells me to start the car up, so i do and the car drives around the lot just fine... So then i tell him thank you and start to drive off, when i come to the first stop sign down the road and i hit the brakes to slow down and then my rear tires lock up a 2nd time.. luckily the guy was following me so then he Towed me back to my house... When he unloaded my car into the street in front of my house, I then started my car back up and It drove perfectly fine up the driveway into the garage area... I was thinking it was the transfercase... But he says it could be my Anti-Lock acting up... When i drive it around it drives fine with no weird noises or anything.... Im leaning more towards the Anti-lock theory..... Any one else have any Insight on this??? I will check the car tommorrow when i get off work at Noon.... I really don't know what to look for, but i dont wanna drive the car and have the rear tires lock up again that could be dangerous not only to me but other drivers as well.... Please help! :( P.S nothing was leaking at all from either the engine, transfercase, or rear pumpkin if that helps

Go see Chrysler, and enjoy your new, free transfer case.

Uh... don't try driving it any more, duh.

K well should i Bring my transfercase with me or what? Or should i call them? I have seriously never done anything recall related so i really dont know what i should do first?

Pull the drain plug on your transfer case first to see if you have oil in there. If it has a normal amount it is not your transfer case and Chrysler won't help you. The recall is for the leaky seal that allows all the oil to leak out and then the transfer case locks up. If there's oil in there it's not a recall issue.

It may be your center differential inside the transmission. If it is - DO NOT TAKE IT TO A DEALER!! You'll get hosed!! They'll charge you more to fix it than a beefy rebuild from TRE or Sheppard.

Well i drained it today and only about a Teaspoon of oil came out, plus there was oil all flung around the driveshaft area, so it was def the Transfercase. I will try to call Chrysler or whoever tommorrow... Do you think i should bring the T-case down there or should i just take pictures down there? Here are some pics...

I would almost guarantee that the dealor will want to inspect the whole car so would contact them first and have them arrange for it to get a flatbed tow.

You should not have much problem getting it replaced if you bring in a copy of the TSB #SR-98-002R2 SEP 98.

Mine went at 70MPH on a 20deg day. Not fun :notgood:

Turbo Monk3y - You sure did luck out; having this happen @ only 30 mph on the exit ramp. I've read too many horror stories of this happening at 70+ in traffic. All you can do is countersteer and pray..... :toobad:

I'd recommend having it towed to the dealership and let them mess with it. I could just imagine the dealership trying to cop out of the recall after learning that you tampered with it after the fact..... Let them do all the work. :dsm:

So what exactly happens during this recall? Do they give you a brand new transfercase with a good seal?

Tow it there, dont put any more oil in it, tell them exactly what happened, and tell them you have not touched it at all. They will inspect the fluid level which will be empty and they should help you out as long as it hasnt been recalled before.
Id be worried about tranny/rear end damage though.

My rear wheels locked up on the highway doing about 45 mph. luckily I avoided the the center wall and just guided it to the shoulder.

Happened to me on an off ramp as well.. Locked in and out while trying to get it to a safe spot.. My vin was already on the recall so I got screwed hopefully you have better luck. I actually bout 2 transfer cases because the spline count so make sure you double check that if you end up getting stuck with doing it like I did. I check for leaks on it every weekend now. It could of been alot worse, it only cost me money, it could cost someone there life.

My transfer case locked up on me doing 60mph but before that happened i heard a small thump and then a loud one so i pulled to the exit ramp after the small thump then the loud one happened and my rear wheels locked up doing 40mph.luckily me being the skilled driver iam i was able to countersteer and avoid hitting a wall but i left a 50foot tire trail and welded the input shaft to the transfer case.
