I just put the rearend w/ 50000 miles on it and it pops and clanks when I let off the gas. I think i even felt it vibrate some. i haven't driven the car at all hardly because I don't want to mess it up worse.
So far:
I checked the lobro joint, took it apart and filled it with new grease, put it back together following my Hanes manual.
I put a new universal joint on right next to the rearend( it didn't have slack in it, just too tight feeling)
I grabbed the axles and wiggled them, they seemed to wiggle inside the rear, but on slightly.
Took my axles to a shop to let them check the CV joints, they said they seem fine and do not need to be replaced.
I took my rearend back out and took the cover off, No slack anywhere that I can see or feel, all the spider gears look fine too.
The side bearings look fine.

I don't know what else too check!

I got in the back seat and let someone drive it so maybe I could tell where it was coming from. It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side, almost like metal hitting metal. Seems like it would be the CV jount but it doesn't have any play that you can feel, and no tears in the boots.
The wheel bearings seem fine also.

PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN!

I know exactly the niose you mean
i will start my story with a 140km/h lock up of transfer case
this was 4 years ago the nioses ended 1hour ago with the puchase of a second hand tailshaft.
ok after lockup i had to change
1 rear L/H drivshaft snapped in 2
1 right angle drive
1 gearbox it was cheaper with diff smashed to peices
1 rear diff
1 yoke leaking oil

still had back off niose

so i proceded to do up tailshaft this is where the nightmare began
after buying all new uni jionts centre bearings and put it back together
I missplaced orientation and probably overlooked the fact that 1 of these shafts was bent from previos lockup.

so after weeks of jacking up car and relocating lobro jiont which also was new, niose still there i gave up.

yesterday i said f$%k it spent the money bought second hand tailshaft
car goes as smooth as anything ive ever driven

my advice compare orientation of all 3 shafts in driveshaft and the only way to do this is another dsm drivshaft i found no information from ralliart or mitsubishi .

hope it helps

When you say tail shaft, exactly from what part of the driveshaft to what part would you be talking about. i haven't taken anything other than the Lobro joint and the rearmost u join apart.

I marked them before i took them apart so I could line them back up, but that doen't mean the guy I bought it from didn't screw up.

Thanks

I was wondering where you were.
I don't know anybody with another DSM.
This is kinda long but I had alot to say.

I tried to think back about my whole situation and when it started.
I drove the car before I knew the rear was toast, it didn't do it then.
i drove it to a mufler shop and got a custom made downpipe to replace the one that the guy I got it from took off.
The new one doesn't have a flex section yet.
I drove it straight home and that's when I found out my rear was gone because it was raining and I knew it was spining too easy.
Anyway, I put a new rear in and replaced the fried center diff a little later. As soon as I started driving it I noticed the new noise. I've been tying to figure it out ever since.

The other day I decided to check the exhaust since it's the only thing I haven't checked.
i shook the tailpipe and heard a knocking noise that sounded kinda like what I've been hearing. I looked under the car and there's only like 1/8" between the exhaust and the mount for the lower suspension arm.
Maybe when I let off the gas it makes the exhaust bounce off that and make the noise since there is no flex section to give when the motor shifts.

I put the rear back in and fixed the exhaust problem.

Still the same as it was.

thats exactly how i noticed my niose i got a decent exaust well quiet.
All im saying if it is the same as my problem it may not be a good place to check is the tailshaft and all the jionts and how they are orientated to each other as i discovered after buying another tailshaft one of my joints was 90deg out which was acting upon itself and vibrating the tension it created out of itself get my drift.
a universal joint is not a constant velocity joint and for each joint with a bend there has to be a return joint.
Also the weights have to be alighned.
i even took mine to a tailshaft specialist he said the shaft was ok but dont think anyone in this country has come up against such a monster.
i went to ralliart mitsubishi race pp they said we dont use them they cut them up and use 2 piece ones.
i will try get pic for you thats all you need i know a dude with vr4 cd it may have diagram.

this gives you an idea of shaft orientation anyhow other than that good luck i couldnot find any other car that includes lobro joint in tailshaft.
