What is under this emblem? I wanted to shave it, but I'm not sure what is underneath. Is it just glued on?

It's just double sided taped on. Get a heat gun and some fishing line and it'll come off no problem.

And you can have a nice Mazda-shaped divot in your tail lens underneath it. It'll bring a pretty penny on eBay, though.

So it won't clean up and look like nothing was ever there?

No, because the sun has not been exposed to the surface with the tape. So it will be really clean looking, while the rest of it will be a little faded. I've tried several tricks with mine, but later had to replace it because it was cracked when I got a push from a buddy. Frosting didn't work, but steel wool with elbow grease did alright, as long as you don't mind knowing it is scuffed.
