Ok, i was hoping beyond all hope that my rear caliper (for the 92 tsi awd) was just squeaking because the brakepad was low... went to go change the rotors and pads today and the whole thing was seized.. it's in pretty bad shape.

I'm trying to remove it now but I can't figure it out.. the shop manual is too hard to decipher too.

Basically I started by removing the top half of the caliper off, I didn't understand though, because the top bolt didn't look like a bolt and the bottom one was a regular hex shaped bolt. So I removed the bottom bolt, snapping it in the process.. but luckily it snapped in such a way that it still seperated.

After that I tried to swing the top half up so that I could reach the bolts for the bottom half bracket. The top half won't swing up though because it's attached to the e-brake assembly... i couldn't figure out how to detach those wires either... or how to seperate it. Also, the brake line seems like it's in the way.

So if someone could walk me through this, i'd appreciate it. I want to try removing it by myself, even if I do break all the bolts holding it down... as long as it comes off. I'm already getting a new caliper, just want to get the old one off.

To to summarize.. how do you remove the top half of a rear awd caliper (if it's even possible) and how do you get it off the e-brake assembly so that you can pull the whole thing out?

Just did this today. Yes, the service manual is really shitty and I ended up figuring it out for myself.

The only thing that will hold you back is the E-Brake cable, and all you have to do, is use something (i used pliers) to compress the spring, and get the cable out of the metal bracket. And then push the whole cable out, through the hole.

Use plenty of WD-40 to do this. Then it's self explainatory.

so for the top part of the caliper, the top bolt is just a hinge? It didn't look like a bolt at all. I'm guessing it doesn't come off?

So for the e-brake cable, no bolts or clips? Just gotta figure out the big spring?

Big hinge indeed. To slide it out, you definately need to get rid of the E-Brake cable.

Compress the spring, twist the cable and pull it out. Then push it in.

There is a small clip you gotta remove. It's the 5.5b illustration in the Haynes Manual.
