i just wanted to know how my calipers come apart. yesterday i took off my driver rear caliper. i took out the 3 bolts holding it in but for some reason the caliper would not come apart into 2 pieces. it's supposed to right? i need to know asap as my calipers seized outward and i cant put it back on until i buy a new caliper, but i need to get this 1 apart 1st. can anybody help me?
 
Three bolts for the brake calipers? There are only 2 bolts and the brake line. If it's stuck out, then take a hammer and lightly tap it off and go and get a new one and put it on the same way (without the hammer of course).

there are two bolts to take the whole caliper system out. another to disconnect the two pieces of the caliper right? i need the caliper in two pieces as the shop im buying from only includes the piston part of the caliper. do i just disconnect the ebrake line and try to pull the caliper apart or what?

There is 2 bolts holding the caliper and 2 bolts holding the caliper bracket.

You just need the 2 long bolts out to take the caliper off your car + a brake line which will leak break fluid once u unscrew it.
 
So your just trying to get the piston out and the gasket correct? or trying to separate the caliper from the bracket?

sorry for not being clear the first time:ohdamn:. Im trying to seperate the caliper from the bracket. Is there two bolts in the back of the caliper and two in the back of the bracket?
 
If you have the caliper and bracket off the car (i.e., you unbolted the bracket from the knuckle and removed the line), then you have two bolts holding the caliper to the bracket. If these are removed, then they will be separated. If you are having difficulty with either or both of these bolts, then they are seized in the tubes in the caliper, which is not uncommon. If the caliper does not move smoothly on those bolts (which are really long pins), then the brakes will not work properly. In that case, I'd just replaced the entire package, bracket and caliper, since it is very difficult to clean the rust from the inside of the tubes. You can also replace only the caliper and the pins, but that, obviously, requires that you take the pins out of your current bracket.

i did take out 1 bolt that was holding the caliper onto the bracket but i can find the other 1. does anybody have a picture?. there is like a cover over where that 2nd bolt should be. is there a difference in brakes from a 1ga and 1gb?
 
There are 1 piston calipers and 2 piston calipers..Why are you taking out the piston, to rebuild the caliper.

Your dust sheild may be in the way.Is that what your saying.

Cap is the bleeder valve..

There is 2 big bolts one on top of the caliper and one on the bottom.

If you found the bottom one.. then just look on top of that one there should be another one.
 
The piston itself is seized you say..

Why not pull the piston out, put in a new seal, and be done with it..Vs a new caliper..6$ vs 40+$

i've never done that before but a used caliper is only 18$ anyway and its 100% functional guarenteed. they'll either replace it or refund you if it don't work.
 
There's 2 bolts holding the whole thing to the rotor and 1 bolt holding the 2 pieces of the caliper together. Once you get that 1 bolt out the caliper will "swing" open then you just slide it out of the bottom piece.

Thank you i thought forsure only 1 bolt held it together. everybody keeps saying 2.:thumb:
Bud hows your caliper does it ever stick?
 
I don't know enough about 1G year-to-year stuff to answer your first question, but if your calipers are like those in the thread I just linked to, then the rears are (obviously) singles.

ps. I like the idea of dual-piston calipers dueling
 
Well in the thread link posted 3 posts before this. It states that all awd rear calipers from 91-94 are the same so yeah you're good man. It's 3 bolts! Lol I just did mine a couple months ago and remember the 3 bolts very clearly on my 92 awd. My passenger rear piston is actually sticking too. I need new rear calipers also
 
Bring is back up, needing help. I removed the one bolt at the bottom and the caliper will slide up some. There is a bolt or pin at the top but I have to stick a thin 10mm socket to get on it. Do I need to pull this top pin out? Its a 93 awd rear passenger side.

How about a picture without the socket attached to we can see the bolt and the bracket in question.

It looks like the seal on the guide pin end of the caliper is gone and you have the socket on the end of the guide pin. If the seal is gone I'd expect that the caliper is rusted to the guide pin but lets see.

Notice how the top pin is enclosed. The guide pin is the one still in the mounting bracket and fits in the enclosed longer bore of the caliper.
