Newmarket,
My shims from rear pads are worn out. I took them out, because it's same with them, or without them. My pads rattle inside the caliper, and make a lot of noise, except when I am actually braking. I only have it on my rear right. Well so I tried to find some sort of shim kit or something that would have them, and I can't find anywhere. And everywhere I go, they tell me only dealer carries them. The dealer told me it's only 1 shim/pad. Set of rear pads is 156 bucks CAN here. I don't want to buy 1 set, never mind 2. to just fix my shims, as I replaced my pads about 6 months ago, and they still look good.

Anyways, my question is, if anyone has good shims, or know where I can get some, or make some, or whatever, any other way to fix the problem, except through dealer. Please let me know guys. Thanks a lot in advance.

My car is 1997 Eagle Talon TSI AWD.

rear pad shims I guess. I was told thats what they are called. They keep my pad from rattling inside my caliper, which it does now. They go on each side of the pad, and are like little spacers.

Just a picture to help clarify. :thumb:

These are pad shims.

nope, i am attaching a pic too, i dont have a camera right now. i just drew this up. ok so if you put a pad down, and you look on top of it, pretend this is the view. those shims are on each side of the pad. of course they dont look like i drew them, i suck sorry. but just gives you an idea where they go. they keep the pad from bouncing inside the caliper, from side to side. its very hard to see, but if you dont have them, your pad will float in there, with about 4-5mm on each side, and be making this metal banging noise when you are not braking. they basically just anti rattle clips, or spacers, or whatver you wanna call them, i dunno if i can make one, looks simple, but just need to know if there is some place where i can get them cheap.

hmm, i am not sure if you took out what i am talking about. ok let me do this, since its night here.. tomorrow i will take a picture of exactly what i mean, because i do have them on another pad .. only missing is right rear. well not missing i just took them out, cus they were scraping the rotor as well. even worse.. right now is just annoying noise i had for 3 months already, last time i checked rotor, and pad and caliper was not damaged, i dont think it moves much, but since its metal still makes a bunch of noise. anyhow, when you are without them, while parked, you should be able to move the pad with your fingers inside the caliper, just a little bit, and you'll see what i mean, if u cant, then you took out something else. anyhow, let me check tomorrow, most likely around this time, i'll try my best to get a pic up, i'll have to borrow a cam from a buddy.

Did you bleed your brake system?
Start in the RR, then RL, then FR, then FL.
You may also have a sticking piston in your RR Caliper.

Actually, the Mitsubishi shop manual says to bleed in this order:
RR, FL, RL, FR

Not sure if it makes a difference though.

The pieces you are looking for are the rear hardware. :thumb:

Yes you can get those at a parts store. The Carlson part number for the rear of a 2gb is 13313. The ones in the picture are for the 1gs.
I work at an auto parts store and that is why I have access to these parts for the pictures and the part numbers. :thumb:
And actually I have 2 1ga's. :p

Guys, yes those pictures, are the rear brake shims. I was stupid to say they are not, when i first saw it, because mine were eaten away by the rotor in the first place, only on one side, so it was like half of it. LOL. My bad, i took a closer look after, and realized you guys are right. Anyways i am in Toronto Canada, I have part source here.. do you guys know any shops that may carry them here? I'd rather buy a hardware set, then pads from the dealer, apparently those are the only ones that come with shims.

Also, DGajre777, i am suprised you dont get rattles. See the thing with mine is, I only hear rattles when i dont use brakes, going relatively slower speed, below 50, and over bumpy roads, well not like huge bumps, but any small bumps, sewers, stuff like that. Also when you took them out, are you able to move the pad inside the caliper at all? Like should move maybe 3-4mm. mine moves a bit, where i took the shims out.. i am curious, maybe its something else, if yours dont move.

But anyhow those shims are the anti rattle clips, that's what I was told by several mechanics, the purpose of them is to keep the pad in place, and not cause any rattles, so I am very suprised you don't have rattling noise after taking them out.

What's a sticking piston?

My mechanic fixed my car a few months back, and what happened was, he forgot to put one of the bolts back into the caliper, and the whole piece came off, while i was driving, and jammed my rotors, i couldn't move the car at all. not even in neutral.

After that my shims were eaten away in the process, and the whole thing is making noise now. I was told its because of the shims, but now that I think about it, maybe the caliper. Any idea what could be wrong?

Hmmm, news to me.
Are you referring the to CD Manual?

I may try your method though and see if I can get better result than the previous owner.

Sorry, I didn't see your post until now. Yes, I am referring to the Mitsubishi CD Manual.

Here is a picture from the manual.

My shims from rear pads are worn out. I took them out, because it's same with them, or without them. My pads rattle inside the caliper

So apparently they are for something after all.
I can't picture how the anti-squeak shims could be "worn away" unless they were installed incorrectly.
Whatever you have there for AutoZone (Canadian Tire?) should carry them, as should any reasonably-cooperative parts store.

Hey, ya I'll go check Canadian Tire, and Part Source.

They got worn out, because my old idiot mechanic, forgot to put a bolt when he was changing the pads last time on my car. So my caliper came off and jammed my rotors, while driving. Anyhow during that process, the shims on one of the calipers got really screwed up, chopped in half, and were scrapping against my motor, when he reassembled everything, so I ended up taking them out, because they were rubbing against the rotor really bad. So now I need new ones. I'll go check it out though.

The kit is called Rear Hardware Kit?
