Ok so i was driving in traffic yesterday and my car started to overheat. So instead of letting it overheat i pulled over and shut it off. I let it cool down and realized the fan wasn't working. So iwas wondering how do i wire it to where it stays on all the time for now until i can run it to a toggle switch? There is a blue wire and a black wire coming from what looks to be the fan motor. I believe that the blue is power because black is ground most of the time so should i just run the blue wire to the positive battery terminal? Let me know.
thanks,
Devon

Yep, thats pretty much it. Run a wire from the fan to the battery and ground the other one. It will run even with the car off, so you will have to pull the power wire when you park it. Also note, if you wire it backwards it will push instead of pull so make sure when you do it, you feel the air going the right way.

Or add a switch.

You can wire in a thermostatic switch which will start the fan when the water temp gets to a predetermined temperature (about 150°F) and shuts it off when it goes below the temperature. This way, when you shut the car off, the fan will still run untill it is cool. Something like this-

I use the same style setup for a 86 camaro drag/street car.

First off thanks for the help everyone and second, my cousin said to ground the ground wire and run the power wire to the radiator fan relay so it only comes on with the car on. He told me i should run it to a toggle which i plan on doing but i need it for school tomorrow and don't have time to get a toggle. But anyways has anyone ever heard of this?

I wired mined into my ignition switch with a relay and everythime i turn my key on my fans on......dont have to worry about pulling the wire off the battery everytime u stop....just takes a little longer to warm up to closed loop

You do know that the fans pull quite a bit of current right? If you're working your fans all the time the car is on, you're going to kill the fan motor sooner then anticipated.

You should just fix whatever issue is causing your fan not to turn on all by itself.

well i wired mine like this cause it mainly a track car and it cools off better between runs

Yes fixing the real problem as to why the fans are not operating is always the best way to go. And you should stay with using the fan relay (I earlier said to just tap into the coil power because you said you needed a quick and dirty fix just to get you running for now until you added a switch later). But no matter how you finally decide to go, whether fix the real problem or add a switch to force fan on or rewire to always keep fan on while engine is running or whatever, always use the fan relay to provide fan power and you just control the relay. You can PM me if you need details on how to wire up the way you decide.

same thing happened to me so what i did is i got rid of the stock fans and bought some slim ones at an autoparts store and wired them to run all the time including in accessory. and it helps out alot. mine is hooked up to the accessory fuse i think i didnt do it i had someone do it for me. i have the left side fan in the engine bay on the radator and i have the other one on the other side of the radiator and it helps:dsm:

I just took out the radiator fan relay and put a piece of wire to short two of the terminals. It turns on whenever the key is turned and works great for me. LMK if you need pics or something :dsm:

Hey thanks everybody for the help what i did was ground the ground and ran the power to the correct relay i am going to wire it to a safety switch later. Thanks for the help everyone.

99% of the time the temp switch in the lower rad. tank has taken a dump. If you are quick and nimble you can change it out with out much coolant loss.

As for manual overide turn the heater control fan switch on and engage the A/C button. You will get both fans at the same time and if you don't want your A/C compressor running it can be disabeled in a number of ways. The most simple is to remove the left fuse box cover under the hood and remove the A/C clutch fuse. (and that also works for drag racers on a hot summer day)
