i have an 1995 eclipse gst manual trans, i bought the car because of the way you can make these cars look , im really into fixing it but not for the racing type and thats where my friends , mechanics and everyone i talk to get me confused and never tell me what can be wrong with the car... if anyone in this forum can be able to help me this is my dilema, My car has a couple of problems such as a little bit of coolant leak, greyish whiteish smoke out of tailpipe ( because of turbo problems ) , two check engine lights on P0170 and P0120 , and Vacuum A is not even connected to any other hose on the car. Everyone i talk to tells me the car is trash to get rid of it too much money to fix but i dont want to do that , anyone knows how and where to start off with this car ? remember i just want it running smooth and simple no performance no racing nothing . thanks for anyone who can answer to this

Where's the coolant leaking from? Have you pressure tested it? A P0170 is a Fuel Trim Malfunction code, boost leak test it. P0120 is known as the "Throttle Position Circuit Malfunction" Check the harness and conector, Throttle Possistion Sensor, Closed Throttle Possition Switch. Some known causes for that code are: The throttle posistion sensor failed or malajusted, an open or shorted throttle possition sensor circuit, closed throttle posistion switch ON malfunction, closed throttle posistion switch signal wire shorted, or posible ECM failure (Unlikely).

can the fuel trim malfunction be because of the 02 sensors? and i have no clue where the coolant is leaking from but it does not over heat, can coolant find its way to the turbo?

yes it does boost but the mechanics that told me the car is trash say that the turbo is gone , so i already have the new turbo hopefully fixing the problem bc i dont want to get rid of my gst at all.

Best bet is to do a compression test and boost leak test. From the sounds of it you may have blown a headgasket.

Technically I bet it could, but I would think it would throw an O2 code as well...?

In another forum someone posted that changing 02 sensor fixed his problem so I may try that first

Quick and honest opinion since everyone here is a true dsm lover , from these problems that I have posted is it worth fixing or is the car really " trash " as these aS*holes say it is ..?

I would just throw parts at without testing anything....you'll end up pissing away money everytime. I've had cars unable to start because of wires shorting into the taillight, does that mean when I get a no start in my bay the first thing I check is a short to the taillights? Hell no! You start with the most likely thing, and slowly move away from that.

your right i have to start off by the obvious and work my way thru , pretty much like proccess of elimination and finding out what caused the problem in the first place. :)

A leak down test would narrow down the culprit. Next if you can do a dye test with the light and you'll find right where the coolant leak is from. you might get lucky and just have a semi blown turbo and not a blown headgasket, but you wont know for sure until you test everything... properly.

Leak Down Test VFAQ

For cheaper you could get one at harbor freights, but yes you get one at autozone or even rent one for like $20. Do you have a compression testor? If so to save you money you could do the same test and get the same results, just would have to follow directions realllllly to the T.

Rent a compression tester at autozone. Unhook your spark plug wires and take out a spark plug( doesnt mater which cylinder you start with i just start with the number 1). Turn the motor over 2 or 3 times than cut the key off. Take a look at the reading on the compression guage, If the reading is within spes than let it sit for about 5 10 minutes and recheck it. Repeat this for all four cylinders. Also, motor alldata is a great investment.

I would start with new friends, personally. Then I would go to the FL portion of these boards and get someone to help you out in person.

If you just like the looks of these cars Why would you put in all this money to fix it and have to spend all the extra money for insurance, gas, whatever it may be, when you can have a daily driver nt eclipse thats a lot cheaper and more reliable. Now if you were into modding and tuning etc it would be a differnt story I would tell you to just fix it...

Agreed with having the NT eclipse for looks and reliability, but once he gets the gst running good i'm sure he's going to stick with it.

If you want a better opinion bring it to ASAPerformance (954 775 4121) . A little north of you in Dania but worth it. That's mostly all they work on are DSM's. Sounds like you got a couple different problems that need to be addressed most importantly the coolant issue.

Fist is first.

Bring all the vacuum lines back like state it before, They insert the diagram, so you know how it goes.

Second.

Do a boost leak and make sure all is OK.

Third.

Make a Leak down test, to see what's going on inside your engine.

Fourth.

Check your Throttle Position Sensor, to make sure is align or is working properly.

With all this four steps, You will definitely know what's going on.

LoLOL! Get the honda so next week after putting on the $30 intake from egay it will be gone.

Love the Honda remark. The Honda by far will have less issues.

Right. Because this is what a budding DSMer needs to hear. Stop posting idiots.

To the OP. Follow the advice the "Proven Members" have given you and dont listen to these haters. At least you're willing to learn, unlike most n00bs.
