i bought a 1990 GSX and i noticed after i got it started it started to blow a ton white smoke out of the exhaust system, also oil was leaking out of the spark plug seals. so i took the intake boot off and oil was all in it, also in the inlet of the turbo. the lines that came from the valve cover was blowing all that oil into the intake system which was causing it to cycle through the motor then go exhaust system.

so then i took off the valve cover and saw that a piece was missing head. its right near the cam angle sensor. its held down by three 10mm bolts. sorta triangular shaped. i called up mitsubishi and they told me it's called a "lash body adjuster" ? im not to sure what it does and mitsubishi couldnt either. WHAT DOES IT DO ? im assuming that piece has to do with oil pressure, thats why all that oil was blowing like crazy through the valve cover im thinking.

another thing is there is a 4lyr metal head gasket on it and ARP head studs. the guy who had it before me put 20 miles on the FRESH cylinder head and turbocharger. i checked the torque on the head studs nuts and they were all pretty much 60-70 ft lbs, except one, which was about 35 ft lbs (between cyl's 1 & 2). so i retorqued them all to 85 ft lbs. did a compression check and here is what they were as follows.

CYLINDER 1 : 155 PSI
CYLINDER 2 : 0 PSI, then 50 PSI with two caps of oil
CYLINDER 3 : 160 PSI
CYLINDER 4 : 160 PSI

so could it be the head gasket ? ?

or is it the piston rings in cylinder # 2.

car has 126,000 miles on it btw.

put in your opinions ! ! ! ! ! !:) :)

thanks

Do a leak down test on #2. If you don't have a tester just apply ~100 psi of air to that cylinder @tdc and see where the air is leaking from. If it coming from dipstick/ valve cover it's your rings, coming from the intake your intake valve is leaking, if it's coming from exhaust your exhaust valve is leaking, and if its coming from coolant tank it's a head gasket.

If you do not have an extra adjuster PM me with your address and I can send you one. Did he have any machining done to the head? I bet he or the machine shop took it off for the machining and forgot to put it back on...

my 2 previous blown head gaskets caused leaks into the crank case via the oil holes/ports in the gasket and consequently would seam that I would have blown rings... was this car heavily boosted and/or ringed out at the track alot? if not then it is highly, I mean really highly, unlikely a ring is gone. Probably just a head gasket... But find out why the head gasket is blown. . . this may entail replacing the head gasket and running a logger. . .

White smoke definately suggests coolant jacket failure at the head gasket or a cracked head. . .

It is a piece of the oiling system exactly as he described it. I am not exactly positive what it does. I THINK it portions the oil from the oil pump to different lines throughout the head. I bet his car made some nasty chattering noises when it ran since I THINK that "adjuster" sends oil the hydraulic lash adjusters. When a head is taken to the machine shop they take it off some the head can be porperly cleaned. I removed mine myself so it would not be lost at the machine shop.

yea the head was machined recently and yea they forgot to put it on im assuming. i cant do anything about it now : (

also i got the head off tonight, # 2 piston has a chip in it. time for new piston(s).

ill probably just throw a new stock piston in it for now. i would go ahead and throw 2g pistons on these big rods but this motor with ARP and a strong headgasket should take 400 give or take hp. i plan on building it up with crower/wiesco combo. :D

AH HAH! This makes sense. I've never removed mine hense my confusion:D .
