I am new to the turbo charged world, i recently had a 97 rs.

I bought a 98 gst. It is quite stock except some crap muffler the previous owner welded on and from what i can see, adjustable shocks and possibly coil overs.

1. When driving i hear a repetitive tick noise outside the driver side window. What would cause this noise? There is no noise at idle. And nothing visible that would be tapping the car in a repetitive motion.

2. I have an idea that i might have a exhaust leak. The noise seems to be coming from the downpipe area. One of the pipes has a dent, like the previous owner hit something while driving on the road. Is there a way to check to be 100% positive it is a exhaust leak?

3. When turning the wheel to the right and accelerating the turbo cuts off as if the air flow is being cut off. Why is this happening and how can i prevent it?

Other than these few things i notice while owning the car for nine hours the car is in excellent condition inside and outside.

Any other tips or advice is welcome to help me make sure the car is solid before modding.

Thank You

My answer to 1. is that something is stuck in your tire...happens to me all the time and it is usually a nail or screw or a rock. :thumb:

Hahah yeah i agree with that i actually have a rock stuck in my tire as we speak but am too lazy to pull it out, and all it does is tick and annoy me, you know what i am going to rip that sucker out!

Wheel weight, nail or rock.

Pull off your down pipe and run smoke through the entire exhaust, if you see any leaking out you have a leak. Or just replace all the gaskets.

This problem is fuel starvation caused by fuel sloshing around in the tank during hard cornering. Depending on the direction of the turn, the fuel pump pickup can get uncovered, leaving the pump with nothing to pump but air.

Owing to differences in fuel tank design, 1G AWDs have this problem when executing hard left corners, while 2G FWD turbos have problems with hairpin right turns. In both cases the fuel pickups are on the side of the car which is on the inside of the turn; of course, the fuel wants to be on the outside (opposite) side of the car.

Thanks ddavisaf. how do i go about preventing this fuel cut out while making those right turns?

EDIT: How would i go about pouring smoke into the exhaust? is there a machine to do this?

Exhaust: Yeah, there's a smoke machine that every exhaust shop should have. It's not a very expensive test either.

Fuel: Minimum of 3/4 tank is recommend by auto crossers to prevent the fuel cut.

I'm in the process of figuring out a better way. Send me a PM and I'll let you know what I find out.

Screw taking it to a shop - get yourself a smoke machine (or fog machine rather) and hook it up (someone you know has to have one... LoL). Most the time it easy to tell where you've got your leaks coming from by jacking the car up and using your hand... sounds like a slight ticking / the sound of air being forced out over and over again for a good enough leak.

Always use jackstands. :D
