idle while driving?

this happened to me about 3-4 times while i was on my way to class this morning. i was cruising in 5th gear at about 2500 rpm, when all of a sudden my rpm drops to idle. i let off the gas and stepped on it again and it went back up. also of a stop in first gear, the rpm suddenly dropped from 3k to idle. it did this a couple of times while i was on my way to class. on my way home, it didnt do it. any thoughts on what it may be? any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
oh yea i forgot to add, my car is stock.

i would think the only thing that would do it would be the tranny input and the flywheel spinning at differant rpms. does your car hold the power if you hot rod it?

when it drops into idle i keep my foot on the gas and even floor it, the boost goes up to about 3-4psi, but the rpm stays at idle, when i let go, the rpm jumps back up to where its supposed to be...
