car shuts down while driving/idle? HELP!!!

Ok ppl need help am stum. I got a 96 rs i be driving my car and out of no were it shuts down like if i would switch the key off. Would pull over and try cranking it and it would crank normal but wouldnt fire up check and had no spark at tht time i would try.did have fuel in the rail but no spark. Waited about 10 to 15 min. Minimum and it would start right back up. Sometimes it would die again and do the same thing other times it wouldn. I guess the longer i wait the long it took. Would like to knw wht is going on. Can some one help cant drive thinkin its going to die on me. I wanna drive in peace.

You said there was no spark? Did you check to see if there was fuel in the spark plugs? Maybe bad wires or plugs. You should check them than go from there.

I don't mean to hi jack your thread but it really odd that my 96 eclipse rs died on me while driving going 75 on the freeway. Pulled over lost all power no lights no crank nothing. Had the car towed home disconected the battery looked at conections reconected battery lights came on turned key to on put clutch in tried to crank died no light no crank did it all over again check engine light flashed twice tried to start died again

Something pretty similar was happening to me not to long ago. It ended up being my air temp sensor, cam angle sensor and idle air control valve. Try getting those checked and see if any of them are bad.

Yea i got a 97 gs and the same thing happen 2 me.... I had 2 change air temp sensor, cam angle sensor and crankshaft sensor

oops, i thought you said you had spark. if you dont have spark only part of the time, try testing your distrubutor and ignition coils. those could be failing on you. (i know ive listed a bunch of parts off, but i just letting you know what i would testout first.)

I would advise you to check/replace the crank shaft position sensor (CPS). This seems to be a very common problem with the 420A engine either being in a DSM, Avenger, or a Neon. Most of the time, issues like yours are a result from a bad CPS.

Happened to me when owning a Neon with the 420A engine as well as an Avenger with the V6 6G73 engine. Almost guarantee this is your problem.
