i have 90 gsx and i have a Eprom ecu, so do i only need the cable and the software and a laptop?
if so i have the laptop and the software for v2 and i saw the cable online for 50$ from the dsmlink site
thanks for your input.

Does your EPROM ecu have a programed chip from ecmlink? If not then that us why it won't work and u need to buy a package or send your ecu to ecmlink to be socketed for the chip, just because your ecu is EPROM doesn't automatically make it ready for link

You can buy v3 lite, and it should do everything you will need. Its only $400. There are also many people who can socket ecu's for cheap. you might get lucky and not have to ship it off and have a friend that is capable.

just send your eprom ecu in to them make sure it's an eprom, then they'll do the socketing and send it back to you along with wires and softeware for about 495.00 i think. then all you have to do is put the ecu back in the car and hook the cable from o2 harness under the drivers dash and to laptop.

the best way is to send the ecu in to them. they'll need to chip/socket it with ecmlink into the ecu.

Not sure why everyone is telling him to get link...

I understand He's asking about it... but theirs other options out there and depending depending on his knowledge and budget... .this may or may not be the best one.

He really doesn't have any mods done is fairly new to dsm's(I think) and probably tuning. So many people think that everyone can take a laptop an just run out tune their car without any knowledge about tuning just because it's link... .Yet most people(average car owner) haven't the slightest idea how to tune a car(Regardless how easy it can be) and have never came close to doing anything like it before

OP
here's a few with links I'll try to explain what you can and can't do with each and what's required for each to do it(in another post)...

As said above
Full V3 ECMlink $495*

"LITE" V3 ECMlink $375*

and the full vs lite product differences

Dsmchips $100-$140* Probably best Idea for the less knowledgeable about tuning

Jackel Speed density $~Free*

You need Also a Chip burner $85 to burn chips and/or a ostrich $175 to do real time tuning...

Also with the chip burner if you have the knowledge you can Download Tuner Pro RT* and with the right Bin Definitions make your own chips and/or use the Ostrich to make changes on the fly(If your interested in this this a good place to start is hereClick here )

*Requires socketing your Ecu
You can select in the step 7. Socket/conversion when ordering link or have Jeff at Dsmchips do it...

Theirs also a few other piggy backs that would work well if you just get a chip burner or a chip burnt for you and if you don't want/or have a ostrich...to make small adjustments as you go...and have a "base map" Or without a chip if you don't get to large of injectors.

Here is a few That will work for tunning and what kind airflow sensor (or lack of) that they work with

Apexi SAFC II
Stock Maf

MAF-T
GM Maf ~ This one I don't highly recommend depending on how it's used and because it's rather large jumps in adjustment points

MAF Gen II
Nearly Any Maf

MAF-Pro
Speed density or Nearly ANY Maf

I'll try to add some more info later... .

Well what about ECU + how does that work
IIRC I don't think Ecu+ hasn't been made for awhile and I doubt that you could even find somewhere to buy it... .

ECMLink is the single best modification anyone can do at any level. It grows with you and let's you properly tell your ECU what to do. There is never not a reason to get it. The other options you listed are band-aids, and for a few hundred more, you can have a tuning system that will be good for 200 to 1,000 HP.

I was so happy when people told me to just get an SAFC Neo (200.00 used) & a GM MAF (40.00 used) & a MAF translators ($100.00 used) for a total of $340.00, when I could just get Link Lite for $35.00 more and have room to upgrade, or just take the plunge and get the full version out of the way for less than $200.00 more.

I don't know a lot about Ostrich, but I know the argument of "you don't need link and probably shouldn't be playing with link yet until you get some more mods and experience," is pretty stupid. If anything Ostrich is LESS user friendly, allows for a lot more room to screw your ride up, and does less.

Getting ECMLink at any point in your build is doing it right. Do it right, do it once.

I posted All of these options Not to start the billionth link VS * thread

but to provide information that there is other options... .

the only thing I'm going to debate with you is

"ECMLink is the single best modification anyone can do"
While its a great product IMO V3 that is (never cared much for it before)

I'd have to argue that the single best modification anyone can to it. Is to TUNE Your car properly. By what means this is accomplished(IE what UI)... is a moot point

I would just turn your argument back around on you and say if that is the case, than someone green to DSMs and tuning should get the most user friendly product for their car, which will Link.

Toe-may-toe, toe-mott-toe.

Dragging this on isn't gonna get anywhere... So I'll say this and leave it at that.

Honestly,
I could care less if it's a 12 year old kid tuning or a Rocket scientist doing the tuning If you understand what your doing your going to accomplish the same task. Just because something is "User friendly" doesn't make it better at getting the same job done.

Like I said in the last post.

"By what means this is accomplished(IE what UI) Is a moot point"

But I'd like to add, if you have enough of understanding to use anything to tune a car. Then you can use the ostrich and chip burner to tune countless other cars also.:thumb:

Truth be told, I think that all systems have their ups and downs. ALL of them! even the stand alones, It's about finding a system that works to fit your needs, something you can work with and are comfortable programming... .

Oh and BTW it Toe-may-toe;)

IIRC I don't think Ecu+ hasn't been made for awhile and I doubt that you could even find somewhere to buy it... .

people arn't telling him to get link, he just asked if all he needed was the cable because he allready has an eprom ecu,and people were saying he had to buy the package as just getting the cable for link wont get him link, yes there are alot of other options out there, but he is obviously new to tuning and wants the most user friendly tuning method, sure you can buy a pre burned chip that is setup for all your mods but how is that going to help a guy that wants to learn how to tune his vehicle himself? Link is by far the best bang for the buck and the most user friendly option that is out there, kudos to you for supplying him with all the great info on other products:thumb:, as he probably isnt aware of any other options, but I would still say link would be his best stepping stone for getting into tuning-Gary:hellyeah:

I really don't like doing this people always take what people are saying wrong on-line. But just to clarify
people arn't telling him to get link,
Yes, people are telling him to.(which is their purgative)More so what I was asking is why people are always Link, link, link...(It was a redundant question... .Not meant to be answered)

he just asked if all he needed was the cable because he allready has an eprom ecu,and people were saying he had to buy the package as just getting the cable for link wont get him link,
I know he just asked What he needed(Not trying to be rude)
But, yes I know I Read what he said.

yes there are alot of other options out there,
Yes, More even then What I listed

But he is obviously new to tuning and wants the most user friendly tuning method,
He's not obviously anything He hasn't said he Was or was not
It never pays to make assumptions. What people fail to realize sometimes is just because someone sounds as though they don't know about something(IE This platform) Doesn't mean they don't know how to tune a car.

Maybe he came from a platform that had a Eeprom Ecu?That Could be flashed with just a cable an some software? And was under the impression that he could do the same (a good example of this in our cars is a 98-99 Ecu with Tactrix and EcuFlash)

sure you can buy a pre burned chip that is setup for all your mods but how is that going to help a guy that wants to learn how to tune his vehicle himself?
Take the other-side of you last argument and say he doesn't have a clue where to start?wanting to be able to do something and being able at to completely different things Also Not everyone wants to be responsible for tuning their car... A lot of people buy a very "User-friendly" product yet in the end. still payed someone else to tune it. Even though the same thing could have been accomplished many other ways... .

Link is by far the best bang for the buck and the most user friendly option that is out there, kudos to you for supplying him with all the great info on other products:thumb:, as he probably isnt aware of any other options,
While that's you opinion, That doesn't make it the truth(I don't what to debate this so to avoid this EVERYONE let's leave it at that) But in any event, Thanks I try sometimes:thumb:
but I would still say link would be his best stepping stone for getting into tuning-Gary:hellyeah:
With out Knowing the person or them saying what their goals are. I'd say that's Just an assumption and could very well be wrong... .But speculating doesn't accomplish anything hence why I tried to provide the info I did... . Rather telling him what to get... .

In any-event don't take what I'm saying wrong so many people, Make assumptions about how people are saying things and get into pointless augments. because the Internet is monotone(or at least that's how I see it)

[QUOTE=MY1GDSM
He's not obviously anything

Not trying to start any arguements, but I would say it is a safe assumption, as if he was not new to tuning he wouldnt have posted asking if just the cable was enough for him to use link. That is definately not a question that would be asked by somebody who "knows". You say again that people ARE telling him to buy link like it is the only option out there. Again, no they are not, he asked a question about link and everybody is answering the correct answer to his question wich is if he wishes to use link he will need to buy the package not just the cable. If he was asking if buying a gm maf was all he need for it to work and people tell him he needs to buy the translator and harness to make it work does that mean they are telling him he has to buy it? No, they are just giving the info to what is needed for that product to work and answer the question being asked. You said people always take things online the wrong way, looks like you are correct on that

Thank everyone for there input and all the great information that you provided
at this time i am a little on the broke side but I feel like i might get dsm link down the road
this thread went longer then i expected but i did read something about ds map and how its free so im going to look into that and Until i have 500bucks for link ill have to settle for what ever is free or cheap or just run stock for a while thanks again

ds map isnt free because of all the stuff you need to buy to use it (about 300)
yeah so i guess id rather link then that

If you don't count the Map sensor and IAT sensor to run Dsmap(because you would need them to run speed density regardless of what you where using)

you could be running it for as little as $85 for just just the chip burner... .

Although the better route would be with the Ostrich...
