I know people have a lot of problems with these in the 2g cars. Me mainly that's why I got rid of mine. I never really hear of them posing a big problem in the 1g cars. I.e. 93 Laser RS AWD. I'm currently looking at one with 78,000 miles and I am kinda leary about buying it but does anyone know if they are as bad as the one's in the 2g's or not? Move question if needed.

CW isn't a concern to me. But I've seen 1g's go for almost 180,000 miles and still pump over 150 compression on all cylinders. Most 2g's I've seen with over 130-140xxx miles are getting low compression numbers and having problems with burning oil and such problems. Wondering about any of that. And this will be a dumb question. But since it's in a 1g its still got the lower compression ratio even though its a 7-bolt right?

The compression on an engine with high mileage is an indicator of how the car was treated and should be taken into consideration when purchasing any car. The 1G's compression is lower (7.8:1 vs. 8.5:1) regardless of which crank they have. There is no reason to stay away from 2G's, just the 2G's 7-bolt because of thrust bearing failure(pronounced "crankwalk"). Eventually I plan on running a 6-bolt IF or-when my 7 gives out.

I have a '94 laser with 130,000 or so miles. the engine is in great condition. rings and walls are great. i know, i was just looking at them :coy: I did the belt and then later cleaned the lifters. One of the valves then broke off the stem and jacked up 1 pistons and the head. If this hadn't happened the engine would have gone for many more years. It had great compression, no smoke and other that the ticking, no noise. I have the pistons on order and just plan to hone the bores and go, they are that good of condition. damn thing still has the cross hatch marks!!
