I swapped from a 13g to a 14b over the weekend in my automatic 92 TSi AWD. I got the 14b bolted up, and noticed that the two coolant lines with the banjo bolts on the sides of the turbo were too small to swap from the 13g to the 14b. I wanted to test something out, so I locked off the coolant lines and only had the turbo being oil cooled for the 3 minutes it was running. The engine temp soared....is this from no coolant running through the turbo? Also, the turbo smoked like hell when I got on it....is that normal on first startup?

What are your insights....and also keep in mind, I didnt exactly plan to run the turbo without any coolant lines in it, that wouldnt be the smartest thing ROFL

I don't think that it should ecffect your water temp, but don't take my word on it. Was the turbo you bought in good condition? If you used penetrating oil to get bolts off then it is normal for the car to smoke for a little while. I would wait until you get the coolent lines worked out then take it for another drive. Did the car drive fine and did it make boost?
Keep us updated.

Also, the compressor wheel in the turbo spins easily, but when I remove my finger from the compressor, it stops...it doesnt keep spinning. Should it keep spinning after I spin it, or should it just be a loose spin when I spin it with my finger?

The car ran, but it didnt feel like it boosted very well. By smoke, I meant that when I got on the gas, heavy smoke came from the back of the car

Hrm, I was looking through slowboy racing for banjo bolts, and saw crush washers, and realized I didnt put them on the oil line that runs into the top of the turbo. Do you guys suppose that could have been a problem? I'll get out there and take care of that tomorrow
