hey i read that a person made a custom pvc intake pipe. wouldnt that melt?? or somthing like that?

Go weigh aluminum piping then go weigh PVC piping.

Then calculate how much power the weight difference would be robbing you.

Let me know what you find out.

well a 12 foot peice of PVC weighs about 4 pounds, aluminum weighs about 15-20lb.but just to install the FMIC u need to get rid of the old piping and SMIC itself, so right their ## saving weight right? fully connected PVC with elbo would probably weigh about 20 lb total minus the weight of the old piping and inercooler.as the aluminum would weigh about 50lb so 30lbs can make a difference i think....

im jsut giving an average of weight for the 12foot peice, but fully installed for anyone who has FMIC including the installation what do u think it all weighs?

the intercooler would weigh probobly 5-6 times as much if not more than aluminum ic piping.
Using pvc piping would not save alot of weight trust me.
If you want to save the 1 pound or less, go for it.

whatever you do, you need to get some beads or something on the ends of the pipes, otherwise they will blow apart.

The shipping weight on my FMIC pipe kit: 5.5 lbs. Includes box, pipes (half of which I didnt use), t bolts, clamps, and shipping material.

The only reason you might have for wanting to use PVC pipe is for money. You're going to have to use some aluminum. Your J pipe and throttle body attachment are going to be alum, it's just a matter of the rest. Suck it up, go on eBay and buy a $100 dollar kit.

I dont think theres anyway that there is a noticable differance between the weight of alum. or pvc. An advantage of aluminum is you can weld it.... no leaks. I did my custom FMIC kit for under 200$ i believe. Ebay pipes and intercooler. If you want it done "right" I would have to say use aluminum pipes, looks better.

I knew some guy who used PVC pipe as an intercooler in his home made turbo 5.0L Mustang, and he kept blowing apart the tubing at like, 8psi.

I think quite a few of us have blown off the cheap plastic convoluted intercooler pipe that goes between the BOV and the top of the SMIC as soon as we started cranking up the boost. I blew it off two or three times before I went steel (Hahn.) Plastic just doesn't cut it. The PVC is just a nogo.

I agree with everyone else, aluminum is the way to go. It looks better holds better and surely will not weigh much more. Even if it were a little heavier, if your conserned about it that much give it more boost to comp for the weight

we made a custom Cold air intake outa PVC piping for a 90s dodge caravan, ill let you know how it goes. Im sure the temperatures will be hotter than post-intercooler intercooler piping. The only reason we did PVC was that it is the worst beater car ive ever seen and we were feeling silly and cheap. Go aluminum on a nice car like a DSM.

I would save the pvc for effluent and spud guns. For one thing, 2 inch is a little small and 2.5 is hard to find. More importantly, PVC can take a huge amount of pressure at room temperature but its pressure holding ability falls off rapidly at higher temperatures. Most ratings only extend to 140°F which can easily be exceeded under the hood. If you extrapolate the data in the chart, it appears that around 180°, the pressure rating hits zero. In reality it would likely still hold boost but why put all that effort into something that could blow up on you at any time?

At 140* it is holding 50 psi. Even if it continued to drop at that rate by the time 15-20 psi would be unsafe. The temps would be between 240-320*. I have used PVC for I/C piping, as well as intake piping on other cars. I've never had any problems with any of them. With the outlet of a 14b/16g turned towards the passenger side it immediately heads away from the exhaust. This enables safe usage of pvc. If looks we're the goal of performance modifications I think we'd be adding some sweet 'brembo big brake covers'. If it works enjoy the ride.

I found this thread because a friend of mine is thinking of using pvc ic piping on his capri. It's a beaten topic but since others will inevitably search this, I figured I'd post my findings. I googled and found this site PVC Intercooler Pipes. I thought it was pretty interesting. I don't think I'll ever use pvc as ic piping but it's interesting nonetheless.

So I was browsing craigslist and came across a camaro with this homemade "hillbilly" air intake. LMFAO ! The guy used PVC pipe to make an air intake ! Just thought maybe others would get a kick out of this as I did.

There are a few people on here that use 3" or 4" PVC for their intakes. However they look better and are used to route the pipe lower.
