hey i read that a person made a custom pvc intake pipe. wouldnt that melt?? or somthing like that?

I've seen worse. Like the guy that uses coat hangar to hold the driveshaft up in his 82' Monte Carlo, or the guy that uses hockey pucks like suspension lift.

Won't PVC put off a toxic fume when heated up or burned? Doesn't sound like a good idea around a hot motor.

Beat me too it^

An 82 monte carlo has a one piece driveshaft. How does it have a coat hanger holding it up? There is nothing to hold.

PVC does not melt til 100-260 degrees Celsius that means, more than likely unless you are running well over 212 degrees fahrenheit it wont melt. But the truth is, most of it is heat treated and wont melt until closer to the 500 degree mark.

So unless you have a open flame in your engine bay you probably don't need to worry.

Pvc pipe actually works pretty good sure it looks tacky but cleaned up a bit it looks decent. Correct me if im wrong but what temp does Pvc have to be at to produce these toxic fumes? Personally I don't think under hood temps get hot enough ( unless you completely disregard logic when you install it )

I think a smooth plastic pipe would work better as an intake material just for the fact plastic does not transfer heat like metal. I know after driving around for about 10mins I can't touch my intake its stainless. My friend made one out of Pvc you can drive all day and still handle it and no signs of toxic gases yet well none as toxic as the ones already exiting the tail pipe.

You could always wrap the pvc if you were worried about the engine may heat effecting it. I would definitely wrap it on the lower intercooler pipe if you are running a front mount because of the proximity to the turbine housing, and o2 housing, but i am good at welding so i don't have to consider using something like pvc.

I built this one from PVC a few years ago and it worked great until I replaced it with a 4" aluminum intake.

Very interesting...

That doesn't look too bad surprisingly. And hell, if you paint it black it looks better. I'd rock it. After all... a tube is a tube. And using PVC as an intake pipe solution would be fine. It's not going to melt, or even get soft from the heat in an engine bay.

Besides house plumbing I've used it for a potato cannon. Had a shoulder stock on it, a look alike scope and painted black.
I have thought of using it to duct air from where the sidemount IC was to the air filter. I have a bunch laying around from when I built my house so it would be cheap. It would need to be painted to look better.

I just worked on a car that had the air intake down that far. The guy drove thru a rather large puddle and water logged his engine.

I believe its called Hydrofluoric Acid if I remember correctly. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Water logged is what happens to your skin when your in the pool too long. Hydrolocked or hydrostatic lock is what happens when a intake sucks in water...where are you allowed to work on cars??

Yes Hydrolock. My mistake on the wrong technical term. I will make sure to remember that from now on. Thank you

I worked on the tear down of this said vehicle at a friends garage. I am not a technician nor do I work in a shop. Terminology is something I am not perfect in yet so any time I can learn something new I appreciate it.

Though I have known that many people use PVC pipes for making an intake pipe, I never realized that making the PVC pipe look half descent isn't impossible. If I could find a way that you wouldn't be able to tell it was a PVC pipe, I might actually do this...

Wrapping it would probably disguise it pretty well after paint. I am really interested to see some of your guys' ideas using PVC piping as intake piping.

If you don't need it to hold any kind of pressure just use the hardened plastic gutter drainspout pieces from lowes. Not made of pvc so nothing to worry about. If you do decide to use it, make sure its heat treated, better safe than dead.
