We put on a new head on my 1g today. Havent done a compression test yet.

I turn the car on, RPM's go to about 2000, then it quickly drops and shuts off. If I give it gas, it doesnt stall out. Any ideas what this could be caused by?

Is the timing right? Vacuum leaks? My friend (he's on here to has a 90 gsx) had so many problems with the machine shop not putting his head together right that I wouldn't doubt that the machine shop screwed somethin up. Maybe valves not closing all the way or not seating properly so that all the compression escapes. Try a compressoin test or a cylinder leakage test.

Yes the machine shop screwed up my head like 5 times before they finally got it right.

Check simple things first before you jump to that conclusion though. Sounds like you have a vaccum leak somewhere. Check around for any hoses that you may have forgotten to re-connect, check TB gasket, intake mani gasket etc. Hunt around with some carb and choke. This is more than likely a sensor that was not plugged back in or a vac leak. Do compression test and leakdown test like Kevin said.

I can hear a loud hissing sound under intake manifold . I think the intake mani. didnt seal well against the head.
