Does anyone know what this little black box is? looks like an evap canister or something like it. Can I remove it or relocate it? It is interfering with my front mount piping.

That black thing is your charcoal canister. It has different locations based on year and transmission. In pre-98 the automatic transcooler is mounted in the driver side bumper scoop and with 98up transcooler mounted in the center. 98up should have the charcoal canister that you see pictured in that front location with a solid plastic piece keeping the air from going in on the 2gb front bumpers. Pre 98 have the charcoal canister located under the battery box for automatics.
I know that ETS and a couple other FMIC kits have you re-locate the charcoal canister to make room for piping. I personally wouldn't delete it unless I knew what I was doing and follow the relocation suggestions from the FMIC manufacture. If there is no suggestions then I would make some brackets to move them out of the way.

... and if you don't have emissions in your state, you can take it off. My charcoal canister went in the trash years ago.

Exactly... - admin edit -

ETS is a more reputable company than both PR and VRSF (in my opinion) and I know alot of other members would agree with me on this. They have been around for the longest and I still consider them as the best FMIC manufacturer out there for dsms. Their kits are made in the US (piping and endtanks I believe, not sure where they get their cores from) and fitment is second to none with minor to no fabrication needed (except bumper cover of course). Look in my gallery and you will see the 7" core on my car. Now the only issue with this is that it seems like their kits might be out of your price range as their cheapest kit costs upwards of $650 and range to over $1000 but trust me it is worth every penny and not to mention that they have been proven on high HP cars and on the dyno.

I'm not knocking the VRSF kit but I myself prefer the PR kit over the VRSF kit but that's just because I like a FMIC where the endtanks show and it's really just personal preference. The VRSF kit was originally made (the design) by AGP which was later copied by XSPower/SSAutochrome (similar to how OBX copied the original Apexi FMIC kits) and now recently being sold by VRSF. There's also countless Ebay sellers that have this kit for sale. Here's a few:

Check out this thread here, this is kinda where this kit blew up and almost every dsm'er on a budget purchased one: http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/new...alk-ebay-fmic-especially-if-you-have-one.html

VRSF have done improvements to the kit correcting known problems that existed (leaky BOV flange, leaky throttle body elbow flange) along with making it easier to mount and with one less piece of pipe I believe. There are also a few members on here that have made over 500HP on this kit and has dyno results to prove it.

The PR racing kit which also seems to be sold by ETD Motors/CX Racing on Ebay (some strange partnership going on here it seems) is a really nice kit as I've helped my buddy install his on his 97 GSX (also told him to purchase it). The core mounts up perfectly with the ease of using the supplied mounting bar which barely took any effort. The piping fitment was perfect and is also available in powdercoated black. Cutting the bumper cover is required because of the extra space that the core takes up (which is common with almost every FMIC kit). However, I've not seen any dyno numbers as yet and my friend will hopefully dyno his car soon and is hoping to make over 380 AWHP. I've also heard that a few members with automatic dsms have had problems with installing the piping. You can get all the info on the PR kit here:

Wrong again buddy, I can get you in contact with Tiago from VRSF if you would like so he can clear things up with you since you seem to think your the intercooler master because you run a ETS. And the kits to the links you posted look nothing like the VRSF core FYI, they all look like punishment kits. Completely useless post you made..

No I'm saying the BR short route fmic kit looks pretty damn similar as far as design goes to a VRSF kit, and exactly my point on the ETS kit..

Tiago has the best kit for the price. I personally talked to Tiago before ever spending a dollar. His kit is better than any short route kit out there. Other companies (not going to say who) were begging him to send him his kit so they could "test" it. It's quality and a true SHORT ROUTE kit with bead rolled pipes and stout couplers and clamps.

I have a 26"x7"x2.5" JDM racing brand intercooler from ebay, and I can tell you guys without a doubt, it works just as well as a straight piece of pipe with a kink in it. On a 68* night I was pushing 120* air by the end of a 1/4 mile, and that's with a cold air intake. My 2g maf was logging 68*, but my UICP was spiking up to 120* by the end of fourth gear, and boost had dropped off from 20psi to around 15psi on an EVOIII turbo.

That's why this thread made me chuckle with everyone arguing about which intercooler is better based on how easy it is to install.

You meant PR right? He likes his ETS because he paid like 3x the price of a VRSF, not because how it performs. :ohdamn:

Hahahahah thats the first thing I thought when he started talking crap about FMIC kits other than the ETS kit LOL.

By the way guys, for those of you that think you cant keep the stock fogs with the VRSF FMIC...... Im about 70% done putting them back in my 2g. Just have to do some serious triming on the driver side fog light and stop being lazy and finish it LOL. passenger side fits easy. I'll post pics once Im done so you guys can do what I did

... and if you don't have emissions in your state, you can take it off. My charcoal canister went in the trash years ago.

I live in Wa we do emissions I passed last year and dont have to do it for another year but i also changed my ecu from 99 to 95 eprom so they wont be able to do OBDII emissions check anymore. My question would be if i removed it and put a filter on the line going to the gas tank and dismissed the CEL with my ecmlink do you think I would still pass emissions unless they noticed it was missing?

All links I posted from Ebay resemble the VRSF kit. The PR core is a totally different shape. I hope you can see the differences in the pics I posted below, good look. :) This should be pre-school stuff, you know identifying different shapes??

If you like the PR more than the VRS just because the PR is symmetrical then you are a :ohdamn:, vrs core fights knock way better and true short route. (I own a PR kit)

Kudos to you my friend, you get the award for the most ridiculous post on tuners this year. The day I purchase a FMIC SOLELY for looks is the day I lose my man card. In no way did I bash the VRSF kit, in fact I added in my previous post that they actually made improvements by taking care of the existing problems that plagued the SSAC/XSPower kit which they copied. If it was solely for looks I would've purchased the PR kit and not my ETS kit. I said I preferred the PR kit because of the endtanks because I mean what else is there to compare. They both are Chinese made kits, they both have been proven on high HP cars and I really think the only thing that can be argued is about the VRSF being a true short route. Other than that they are in the same boat. Oh and learn to tune your car :)

You meant PR right? He likes his ETS because he paid like 3x the price of a VRSF, not because how it performs. :ohdamn:

Lol ok again genius. Umm, you have no idea what I paid and if I purchased the kit just for looks do you think I would go ETS? Obviously they make better performing FMIC's. The day I see a PR or VRSF kit on a 1000+ hp dsm, then I'll be convinced. You make no sense, your point is invalid.

Hahahahah thats the first thing I thought when he started talking crap about FMIC kits other than the ETS kit LOL.

You're in the same boat and it's sinking fast :)

ETS is better, hands down. VRSF is just a remade chinese SSAC fmic but better.

+1. Id buy another ETS over anything. No trimming, cutting, or anything. smooth fitment, great for performance

First of all let me say, ETS is a fantastic company with great products. I have nothing bad to say about them an the products they make and have great respect for what they've accomplished in both the DSM & EVO community.

With that said, there is not ONE ETS FMIC that doesn't require cutting or trimming. The only ETS FMIC kit that is comparable to our 2g kit is thier Ultra Short Race kit which retails for $899 in 3.5" form. That kit requires every bit of cutting as ours does.

Let me break down the history of our kits. I started selling these back in 05 as a hobby and the first kit I purchased from our supplier I installed on my own vehicle. That kit is identical to all the ebay, ssauto, xspower & generic named companies on ebay that are now available. I had to purchase about $90 worth of extra stuff from tbolts, install hardware & couplers and it delayed the install 3 days since most of the stuff had to be sourced on the internet. That price is also including having the machine shop fix the throttle body and bov flanges which were leaking horribly. The original kit also required that the lower intercooler pipe be cut about 2-3" in order to clear the oil filter (which leads to an unbeaded pipe), required drilling of the brackets (which sound a lot easier than it actually is).

The first revision of our kit included all of those missing things (tbolts, couplers, install hardware & flanges). We also fixed the leaky TB, bov flange & pre-drilled the brackets. This kit was sold way back in late 06. The first rev kits made pretty good power and flowed pretty well but we felt that better cooling could be had with a better engineered core. The better engineered core would also help fix the overheating issue most people had with the ssauto/ebay kits.

For the second rev of the kit we tried 6 different variations of intercooler cores with multiple combo's of fin density & geometry (louvered fins, offset/staggered fins both internally & externally). What we ended up with was a very efficient, low pressure loss core that provided great flow to the radiator. The dyno plot below is a direct result of that change:

28WHP & 30WHTQ GAINS ON TOP OF ANOTHER BRAND'S FMIC!
You must be logged in to view this image or video.

Those gains were from one FMIC to another, just imagine switching from a SMIC to our FMIC :aha: We also made minor revisions to improve overall fitment to the core & piping:

-Modified the intercooler inlet so the lower pipe wouldn't have to be cut
-Replaced the lower 90 deg L pipe with a coupler to cut remove 1 pipe & coupler (one less place to leak)
-Added provisions for the use of our J-pipe (good luck getting the ssauto kit to bolt up to any j-pipe without extensive mods)
-Changed the upper pipe length to fit without the need of an extended coupler.
-Added rubber spacer to fit inbetween the core & frame to prevent long term damage from metal on metal contact (RUST!)
-Changed bracket dimensions so the kit fills the entire mouth of the kit rather than leaving a gap like the ssauto/ebay kits.

The third and latest revision incorporates our new core as well as a modular flange design pictured below which allows you to change BOV's quickly & easily without cutting & welding. We also made changes to the hardware so the correct sized mounting hardware for both your BOV & the core are included (the fog light holes are meant to be drilled & tapped to utilize the include M8x1.25 bolts). The result of a ridiculous amount of modifications over a 4 year period:

We also offer an option for customization such as BOV flanges, GM MAF's & j-pipes which you won't find with any ebay kit. So now we have a kit where literally every part is different from the ssauto/ebay kits with the exception of the driver side end tank.

Are you kidding me? Trust me I've been here long enough to back up and know that everything I post is 100% correct...ok? I won't even go into finding links and sources for you to stuff your brains with because honestly, it's not worth to me. Maybe I should treat you like a newb and tell you to go search and do your research before you tell me I have no idea what I'm talking about..GTFOH

I understand that you may have been around longer than some of the guys here but making an assumption about a vendors product without researching it a bit more, while telling someone else they need to research seems a bit contradictory. Especially when said vendor has been around since 2002.

Also, that picture you posted hasn't been used since early 08. It's been quite a while since we've used this kit with that smaller L pipe.

I know you have the forums best interest at heart when you take the time to try to inform people but it really does do more harm than good when it's misinformation.

id say go with a xs-power fmic. it's a short route and you can get it shipped for $300. i helped a buddy of mine put one on his gst. it's a nice kit for the money. no need to dish out like...$800 on an intercooler kit since it's nothing more than aluminum piping and no moving parts.

Read above, paying $300 for a kit, then another $80-$100 in additional supplies & service to have a jerry rigged product doesn't seem like the right way to go to me :)

For anyone still looking for a kit, we're running a black friday group buy special right now :thumb:

Ive had both kits on two different 2gs. I can say that the VR Speed kit just seems like a better kit for the typical DSMer. I just wish we could easily keep the fogs on 2gbs but I don't consider it a big deal.

Should have went with a VRSF..

Many people like the VRSF over the PR because it is a true short route fmic, it just isn't a very known company yet but they're getting bigger faster. The kit is also cheaper and has been used on many high horsepower cars, it is almost comparable to a ETS kit IMO. I say this because I just got done installing one.

Your VERY wrong on this, don't post info that you have no idea what your talking about. :nono:

Thanks for the support guys, it's greatly appreciated :thumb:

... and xs doesnt come with bolts ot actually mount the kit, and the vrsf one does, but its not even correct length or thread, you have to go to hardware store.

on top of that bov flange on vrsf is slotted so big the washer goes through, need to get oversized one.

The bov flange has been corrected as well as the correct length bolts. The kit was designed to be mounted with the supplied M8x1.25 bolts rather than using the existing M6x1.0 fog holes. Honestly I don't feel comfortable supporting a 25lb FMIC core with only 2 M6's but if the user feels comfortable, they can pickup a set of bolts in preparation of the kit ($3 for both at any hardware store) :)

Thank You!

that answers my question!, I will be ordering one in about a mths time, will give everyone an update after the install!

PM me if you have any other questions, I'd be happy to answer any that you may have.

Just got my kit on my 2ga, cut the bumper to fit. kit looks sweeet.
fit awesome, better than my roommates bc the coupler on the side of the radiator was inside the engine bay about half inch more so the coupler wasnt on the radiator side rubbing it and the clamps fit better. now i gotta do something about the stock exhaust...

I can only speak from experience, and my experience is that the PR kit fits terribly on a 90 Talon AWD. I had to do so much cutting and modding that I might as well have gone with an ETS kit. (Well, that's what was running through my mind the whole time.)
