I'm a currently attempting to pull the block and tranny on my 90 gst parts car. i just got done reading the vfaq on it and got a pretty decent idea on what has to be done. on the vfaq the axles are disconnected by the tires (sorry if i word it wrong I'm just getting into to suspension here). is there a way to take them out of the tranny? or is this fine? also, there's a lot of first happening here so i have some seemingly simple questions for the more experienced members. I got an engine hoist and a load lever (looks exactly the same as the one in the vfaq) what would be some good mounting points for it? i already have removed everything above the bottom end so the head, exhaust and intake manifolds, turbo and o2 are gone. any help will be much appreciated thanks

To remove the driver's side axle, unbolt the 2 bolts that hold the middle shaft to the back of the block. That should give you enough room to pull the shaft out of the transmission.

The passenger side can be removed by unbolting the upper ball joint and tie rod and pulling the axle end out of the tranny.

Also, 'removing by the tires' means that you take the axle nut off and pull it out of your wheel bearing. This all sounds good, but over time those parts rust weld themselves together and become impossible to seperate without damaging either part.

thanks for the quick reply, looks like im off to garage to continue. as far as the parts getting rusty, I've experience that more than once while taking this car apart. thanks again for the reply

just went under the car and there are no 2 bolts that hold it to the block. i think i know what you're talking about because a while back they came out on my 2g gsx but this 1g does not seem to have them.

Sorry, I didn't even notice you said it was a FWD.

The FWDs have one piece axles, so you could do the same on the driver's side as you did on the passenger side. Remove the upper ball joint and tie rod end and pull it down and out.
