has anyone removed a engine without a cherry picker? i need to get my engine out to do a small rebuild by nov 3rd and right now i dont have the cash to buy one since i just spent it on the rebuild parts. anyways do you think me and my buddy could just lift it out? i could always take the tranny out then take out the exhaust and intake mani and alternator and then just pull. has anyone done anything half assed like this? any super secret mechanic tips ROFL

re-build it in the car -
other wise, i doubt you and your friend will be able to acualy pull it.
you can always rent one. or use a chain fall around a rafter. (or a tree if your a redneck)

If you don't mind some physical therepy after you pull your back out trying to lift that 300 pound block outa the car, go for it. If you HAVE to, just put a jack underneath and drop it through the bottom. You'll have to have two more than likely, one to jack the car up when the motors out, and one to hold the motor. It's a three person job. You'll also have to remove the transmission first so you can balance the load. Someone will have to stablize the motor, someone will have to jack the car up, and the other person lowers the jack with the motor. Then careful slide it out of the bottom of the car.
But unless you're getting the block decked or bored, I would leave it in the car. It's not hard to rebuild it in the vehicle, it is just a little slower and messier.

I have been lucky enough to have the pleasure of pulling a motor out without a cherry picker. Not on my car but it wasn't that hard. I removed everything from the head, to the crank and rods/pistons. Getting it out isn't the problem it's getting it back in once you are done rebuilding it. Very difficult. For being an in-line 4 it is out of this world how much that little block weighs. Not a fan of doing it that way but if it's all you got it's all you can do.

I once sold a 6-bolt motor to a guy on this site. It was all intact, but still mounted in the vehicle. He and a buddy arrived with only basic tools and a case of beer. They removed the accesories, the manifolds, and then the head. There was no tranny. And finally, they bare hugged the block and lifted it out. It only took them about 1.5 hrs from start to finish.

Dude. They're on sale at Kragen for $169. If I were one of the lucky ducks chosen to help out on this project, I'd pay that much to get out of the agony.
Checkers up here (Same as Kragen) is having a sale for a 3 ton crane and engine stand for 200 bucks... :D Going to go pick up two on payday... quite happy.

hehe we got it out this morning only took 2 hours and i removed everything from the tranny, manifolds, alternator, head, we just took out the bare block and it wasnt heavy at all haha but the hard part was holding that thing up while he bolted it to the stand

I bet that was a big PITA.

Just for future reference, most engine stands are designed to come apart. If you pull the pin, the top part (where the block bolts to) actually slides right off the stand. That way you can lay the block on the ground and you can it it all bolted up, and then have a buddy help you pick it up and slide it onto the stand. :thumb:

Yeah, but you're explaining this to someone who pulled the engine without a hoist. Kinda like hopscotch with an amputee.
The best show is watching the knock sensor come out while one of them turns the block.
