So i go up to Boston today to pick up some parts for my eclipse. *1992* i get up there fine.. farkin thing is insanely fast.. on the way home the dashboard lights start to dim.. all of a sudden i get no response from the throttle.. the car basically stops running... battery dies..

i had a friend follow me home because i thought i was having a power loss... i pull out the battery and charge it w/his car for 20 min while waiting for AAA truck. Charges.. car runs for about 10 min b4 the shit dies again.. it seems like the alternator is dead, had a new one put in last September.. I'm going to be buying a new alternator and cables.. but is there anything else i could be missing?

Its a 1992 eclipse w/GST engine swapped in and upgraded the turbo/piping..

Could it be that i was using a stock alternator and need a bigger powered one? I'm also had an Ever start battery that was about as old as the alternator.. buying an optima tomorrow.

I'm just tryin to figure out anything else i could do to make this thing not die on me again haha. I looked ti up on the forums as far as checking grounding wires to see how they are and if need be moving them to a new spot.. checking fuses both outside the car and inside w/a voltage meter.

if it needs to be in a shop anyone know a shop in the cape cod area.. specifically Yarmouth.. or anyone who can help a college kid just trying to tune a dsm?

Thanks for reading this.. i appreciate it.

Jon

Sounds like you're just frying alternators. May want to test your power transistor (bolted to the driver's side of the intake manifold, down below the coilpack) too. Do you have your heatshields on? Too much heat CAN (will) kill an alt damn fast, on the order of one every couple months. Some have had good results running shieldless, but they tend to be the exception to the rule.

1G DSMs all used the same 75amp alt. There's a 'canadian model' 90amp (which RRE told me is the Galant VR-4 alt, to accomodate the rear two window motors), but you should be fine with the 75A unit.
Probably also have a dead battery by this point. I like the Odyssey dry-cells over the Optimas. More cranking power, less weight, won't off-gas in an overcharge condition. In some cases they can be cheaper, too. :D

heat shields are on... ive already ordered a new alternator and i gotta try to get the car into the shop now..

BUT.. i still cant get over how fast it was while running.. thats more then enough reason for me to get this crap totally fixed..

So I got a new alternator put in there.. it works..but its still not charging.. i checked te ground wires..they all look good... no rust/currosion on te battery terminal *new*... still wont charge though..

Check the 80 amp fuse in the fuse box under the hood. If you have a new alternator and its still not working, then thats your problem. I thing its the black one on the very corner. Its bolted on, so you can just pull that out. Its 2 10mm bolt holding it down.

I cant really check to see if its blown.. how would i know?

its can be wiggled around a great deal. i gotta get a small enough 10mm to get in on the other side. didnt have time to do that today.

Okay replaced the 80amp fuse.. its not it..

anything else?

what about the 40 amp alternator fuses ? or the fuses on the positive batt wire.
