priming new motor have questions please help

I am working on getting my rebuilt 6 bolt motor installed in the car. I am trying yo prime the pump and motor with a drill. Acccording to my aftermarket oil pressure gage it say's im only getting maybe 5 or 6 psi of pressure. My drill spind at a max of 650rpm's it that to low of pressure?

I just unplugged the coil pack, took out the spark plugs, and unplugged the fuel pump. Then I turned it over about 7 time for about 30 secs each time. Taking the spark plugs out allows the starter to spin the motor easier and faster. I wasn't able to even get a reading on my electrical oil gauge, but when I fired the car up it built oil pressure instantly.

Did you fill the oil filter with oil before installing it? If you are able to build any pressure at all using the drill you should be just fine for when the engine fires up.

I didn't have a gauge hooked up when I primed mine on the engine stand but with no lifters (HLA's) installed it took forever to get the HLA bores to fill up on high speed with my tough Dewalt drill. Plus the engine idling at <1000rpm is spinning that oil pump sprocket way faster than an electric dril could. 5-6 psi is good, just double check everything in your mind that you did before firing up the new engine. My Bro - in- law and I just did an oil pump on a V6 6G72 motor.

Same design: oil pump bolts on front of the motor.

You have to get the oil cavities filled with oil first, for just spinning the rotors on the pump with no oil inside to work on will not do any good. The default way to prime an oil pump is to shove and pack vasolene in the rotor cavity prior to rebuild where it acts like a vacuum when the rotors are spinning to draw oil up from the screen tube. But new techniques popped up which is a lot easier...and one of these tricks is below:

Took the sending unit out, take a ketchup squeeze bottle and attached a line of 3/16" vinyl tubing to the end.

Filled the bottle up with oil, shoved the tubing into the hole and squeezed two containers full of oil into the hole.

This fills up the oil filter and rotor cavity and galleys in the pump housing so it will be all primed.

After fill, we reinstalled the sending unit with wrapping thread tape on the threads.

We hit the key and oil suddenly was pumping up to the head in a quick and pressure was up just like normal.

Imo, what you've done with the drill should be sufficient but, if your not certain you should remove the plugs and spin it over with the starter for a few seconds.

Well im getting oil to the head and everywhere i was just not certain on if what pressure i was getting was enought

You aren't going to build much more than a few psi with a drill. It may spin 650 rpm at free speed but when there is a load on it it will spin slower. If you have oil going to the head than you are primed and ready to go.

What is normal idling oil pressure in a 1g dsm

Between 10-15psi with balance shafts installed and fully warmed up. Rule of thumb 10psi per 1000rpm

There's not really a spec for that but id say anything higher than 20psi no bs and new bearings...
