Pretty freaky, check your tires!

Yeah I saw this on the news, its really too bad that people had to die for it to be brought to light though.

And its great that all the big companies people go to get tires are selling these :notgood:

Wow, that's crazy! OMG

I agree with Eric that it is sad that the worst had to happen for this to be brought to the public's attention. What's even sadder is that nothing will probably be done about it, especially if that guy doesn't see a need for an 'expiration date'.

I'm going to look at mine now though. I just bought "new" tires last month and I'm curious as to how old they are.

I know my tires are old, I've got some 02-03s on there but I'm already planning on buying new tires as soon as I figure out my rear camber problems.

Remember that age also makes them harder too. Older tires are much less effective at providing the levels of grip that new tires can.

so if your tires are 6 years old they are junk? Or if you are buying tires brand new and they are 6 years old dont buy em?

At what age should you say: alright, i gotta take these tires off this car and get some new rubber, if say you still have plenty of tread left?

Did any one notice that the vehicles in that warehouse were all suvs. I have to say this is a bunch of B.S. Me and my dad have been selling used tires since 1981!! Most of the tread separations like the ones that they showed where cause by over-inflation or a really crappy brand of tire. I would have to say that at least 80% of the customers I deal with put the amount of air in a tire thats on the side of the tire. They don't read it close enough to notice that it says max pressure at so and so weight, and thats cold pressure. When you start driving down the road pressure builds up 5-10lbs.

Example I had a lady come in and buy numerous pairs of tires. All the tires where separating just like it shows in that video. There was no way I had sold her 3 bad pairs in a row. I decided to check the pressure in her tires and to my surprise there was 90psi and over 100psi in the front tires. The tire was rated for 80psi. I gave her the next pair and explained to her about what it says on the side of the tire and I never saw her again until she wore that pair out.

They really have no proof on a tire being bad to put a 6 year limit on it. If it is stored in a cool dark place it will last for quite awhile. If its out in a dry desert where the elements beat on it all day you be lucky for that tire to last 3-4yrs.

It says tires over 6 years of age can be dangeros so I would take it that when the tire gets close to that age it is time to get a new tire.

Woot just checked my eagles and they were made 48 week of 2007.

I got some new tires last year, the old tires had been on the car since the previous owner bought the car in 95. I was wondering why my car was so low before i got new tires. I did not drive it that much so dont bash on me it was always broken or i was driveing my van.

i remember watching this on TV when it first came out. Just like the Firestone issue, they wont fix the problem until so many people die or get hurt.

Oh geez, on my other car I think the tires have been on there AT LEAST since my Dad bought the car in 1981 ...I'd better look into that WTF

I see this all the time at work (Goodyear/other tire vendor). Mostly I see it with trailer tires. Recently, a gentleman came in with a spare trailer tire that he said was "going low" and he wanted it either sealed up or a tube put in it. When we inflated the tire, air was seeping out of some 30 or so cracks in the sidewall, mostly caused by weather. When informed, the customer said that it was a "brand-new tire" and that he didn't want to just discard it and buy a new one. So he had us put a tube in it, against the recommendations of the technician. Bear in mind that, especially on trailer tires or classic car/show car tires, people think that mileage is the only deciding factor on a tire's integrity. They think "Oh, I just bought these trailer tires 15 years ago, but they've only seen 500 miles of driving, and they still have the little mold nubs on them, so they must still be perfectly fine" but those same 500 mile old tires have been sitting in water, sunlight, and other contaminants for 15 years. Chances are, they're not all right.

Everyone, check your tires, maintain the proper pressure, and keep up on your rotations.

well, im looking at getting a set of dunlop direzza z1 star specs for my evo 8 rims i picked up, and the tires didnt come out until this year, so i guess i'll be good! haha

The tires on my car now were are made in 03... i guess im getting close.
