hey all i have a 93 eagle talon FWD and was wondering what ways i could use to remove the power steering to get a natural steering feel rather than a hydralic feel?

Simple, take the belt off and if you like it drain the fluid and part out the pump. Without the power steering isn't that bad. It may to hard while the car is at a stop, but that's real man drive. And once it gets rolling you can't tell the difference in steering.

so 1gdsm4g63 your saying take the p/s belt off then the pump off and drain the fluid and its good? wont that just instantyl eat the rack teeth and whine like a mofo?

Doesn't really matter if you do it all at once, but you go to drain the fluid before part of the pump. And what do you mean eating the teeth? What teeth? The pump is not sprocket touching sprocket, it's just pulleys system with the wheel turn the other if the belt is connected.

He's talking about the steering pinion spiral gear eating into the angled teeth on the rack.

Actually manual rack and PS rack are basically the same outside of pistons on each side of the rack where the fluid is pushing on either end where needed to aid in moving the rack easier...and these pistons having "O" rings that love to eventually give, and you get the PS leakages..and eventuall PS rack replacement.

I'm experiencing PS rack leakage now and debating either on PS unit replacement, or just drain the system and take the belt off the pump until I get around in doing the replacement.

Just more fun having PS, but driven many cars and farm trucks that PS wasn't even heard of, thus, being familiar with working the arm muscles in tight situations -

My 1g came like this and I don't recommend it. At higher speeds the steering wheel shakes really bad because there is nothing to dampen all that road vibration, hitting any little hold automatically jerks the wheel out of your hand, there is NO performance advantage and you can actually destroy a power steering rack. The fluid in them helps lubricate. After long enough metal on metal with no lubrication it gets very hard to turn. I have ran into this problem first hand. Keep the power steering.

well very true i see what you are saying but cant u just loop the lines and put a little bit of fluid in the rack itself before u loop the lines then there is still fluid in there to keep everyting lubed up and almost no chance of dirt getting in the rack?

Get a manual rack out of a 1.8.
Done.

I agree. I've driven looped cars and like my 1.8l rack much better. Yeah, it wiggles and rattles a bit, but guess how many alternators I've had go out? ;)

Be careful if pump it leaking. It will ruin your alternator if the fluid get on it.

As for performance, there is no real performance gain except the it save weight and it also cleans up you engine. It may not mean so much to you now, but when you get to certain stages you'll know what I'm talking about part out everything that is not needed. And it doesn't damage the rack and pinions. A lot of people and I have been driving without the power steering pump in play for a at least 5 years.

agreed lando but i may just stat with looping the lines to see what its like befoe i do a full conversion becasue the rack in mine now is the original from 1993 and has like 130,000 miles of use and has a leaking problem as im sure we all know about.

and 1gdsm4g63 are you saying that i take all the lines out, the pump out, and the rack will not eat itself just like that? sorry just a little confused on your post.

I just did the manual steering rack swap from 1.8l last week and I like it. It drives real nice and doesn't seem too tough to steer in parking lots. Be sure to grab the mounting brackets with the manual steering rack. Otherwise it goes right in.

Drain the fluid and part everything out and no it will not eat away at the teeth. Me and a lot of people driving without the the power steering and I haven't yet had problems. With or without the power steering pump the same amount of force is apply to the gears.

okay i get what your saying. so i just need to unhook the hoses, let the fluid drain and remove the belt?
