Ive been looking at aftermarket steering wheels and I got to thinking. Ive been told its against federal law to remove or disable the airbag. Has anyone been hassled for removing an airbag?

Yea but all they have to realize is that there is a passenger side airbag. And Ive yet to see one with a pass but not a driver. Im just alittle paranoid. I get hassled alot.

I have had my NRG steering wheel installed for over a year now and have had no problems with cops. Im in Arkansas though, so if your in a state that does safety inspections you might get into some trouble. It is against the law to remove air bags from a car that has them after all, but so is removing the factory cats... LOL

I dont have a passenger side or drivers side air bag. as long as your srs lights doesnt stay on your fine. Once you remove one airbag from the car the whole system groudns out so if you dont have an airbag your passenger side air bag doesnt work. Which is why I took both of mine out.

i bought mine with a grant gt steering wheel, i passed inspection fine I still have the stock one and the passenger one was never removed, i used that to prove to my mechanic they hadn't deployed. The law also states that once they have deployed you dont need em, so if you are really concerned about it just pull them both out. I wish i knew how to shut the srs light off though

If the SRS light bugs you that bad you can always pull the bulb out of the cluster.

NO. All you have to do is unplug the air bag control unit. It's under your center console behind the e-brake. You should see a metal box with a wire harness attached wrapped in yellow loom. Just unplug this and the light will go off aka disabling the system.

I would say it is easier to undo the 2 screws on the center console and lift it up and unplug the actual harness from the airbag control box then it is to take out the cluster even though that is cake work also.

So what do people think about aftermarket steering wheels? Has anyone kept their cruise control with one? Im thinking about getting a Jet Momo (Black).

now does srs light pop up on obd 2 scanners

No they don't show on scan tools. The SRS has it's own ECU.

I have a Sparco Trium steering wheel that I got from my wife on my birthday and I like it a lot. However, from past experience, I'd suggest buying a MOMO hub adapter instead of Sparco bacause the Sparco adapter made my steering wheel lean to the right when I was going straight.

As for keeping the cruise control, there probably is a way to do it. I've seen someone hook up their cruise control to an EVO steering wheel that they installed on a 2G on this forum.

Yes you can relocate your cruise control, there is a how to on here somewhere. Basically you cut a new hole for it on the column and put some spacers in is to also push it back.

Here was mine....

My roommate has some kind of adapter on his sparco steering wheel that has cruise buttons built into it. Look into something like that. Id post pics but the car is in storage until I get the motor done on it.

I dont know much about the SRS system but if removing it grounds the system out, it might be possible to trick the SRS computer. For a legit safety inspection, the inspector has to turn the car on to verify that the SRS light comes on and turns off after the self test. Passing safety all depends on how lazy your inspector is. Most in my area are pretty lazy so I get away with alot of stuff that I shouldnt.

Well for the SRS all it is is a resistor in the bag. All I need is to figure the resistance on the back and install a resistor of the same ohms and whala the car things the airbag is still installed.

I've never heard anyone getting pulled over and hassled for not having a steering wheel-mounted airbag removed due to aftermarket steering wheels. Almost every car I've owned has had an aftermarket steering wheel; even my EVO.
