I have 98 Mitsubishi Eclipse GS with about 114k miles on it. My problem is that when I initially start my car there is a loud screeching sound when I turn the wheel for the first couple of times. Usually after a couple of turns it does not screech anymore. This always happens if the car has not been driven for more than 8 hours.
My power steering fluid levels are high in the reservoir. I have checked the power steering pump and did not find any signs of leaking. I have also replace the serpentine belt not too long ago at Pep boys.
At first I thought the belt was loose, but when I took it back to the mechanic he did not find any problems. Like I said it only screeches the first couple of times when I start it up and the Pep boy's mechanic just turned the wheel all the way to the left and right and it did not make a sound.
Just recently I started to have a very little resistance every once in awhile when I would turn the steering wheel. But the screeching problem has been around for about 3 months.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
