Hey, i was wondering how many of you have done this and if you have run into any problems because of it. i have seen on a lot of dsms both 1g and 2g people have done this when they get poly motor mounts. To be more clear the timing belt motor mount bracket that is attached to the motor mount itself, you know how it attaches to both sides of the block since it is a twist mount, i have seen a lot of engine bays where people simply cut the piece of the bracket that extends forward and goes over the studs. So basically it just has the two bolts mounting it to the block and then the motor mount. Also you take the big bracket that bolts to the front of the block with four bolts. The bracket that holds the power steering bracket on and you cut that or just simply remove it completely along with the power steering.

That is my next question. I'm contemplating removing my power steering, i just want to hear from people who have removed their power steering. If i removed it i would be getting a manual steering rack, i found one close by at a junkyard, it could just be out of any 1g dsm with manual steering correct? does it matter if the motor is 1.8 or 2.0 or turbo or not?

So to sum it up, the motor mount bracket cutting, the advice on power steering removal from people with experience with it out. Just if it is not a complete pain in the ass to drive. And then the manual steering rack that would be compatible with my car. Its a 91 eclipse gs (fwd turbo)

Thanks for any help.

Hey I have two pics in my gallery that you can check out. Havent had any problems because of the cut motor mount, and its another thing that makes working on these cars much easier.

Also about the power steering, give it a shot for at least a week before you go and buy a manual rack. I honestly like the feeling and respose in the steering wheel that the power steering rack with no assistance.
Good luck,
Ryan

if you like the feel of a unassisted ps rack youll love the manual rack. ive driven both and the manual rack has all the feel but its much easier in parking lots then the unassisted manual.

I really didnt have a problem with tight turns untill i welded the diff. NOW it sucks driving in tight corners. Thats something to think about to.

Ya thats exactly what i'm talkin about doin, cuttin the motor mount bracket and then either completely getting rid of or just cutting the big cast iron bracket that bolts to the block. I see you have gotten rid of it completely, did you just use washers to space the oil dipstick bracket? or did you bend it so that it will bolt to the block without the big cast iron bracket being there, because the dipstick bracket goes on the outside of the big cast iron bracket and then they share a bolt. To test out the car without power steering should i just not install the power steering belt? Without a manual steering rack i'm just afraid i wont be up to the tast of turning the wheel in parking lots and what not when i'm not moving. When the car is off and i try and turn the wheel its really hard for me and thats basically exactly what it would feel like if i just didn't install the belt, to make it a little easier i would have to go with a manual rack correct?

Oil dipstick- What i did because it wouldnt fit with new exhaust manifold and wastegate, i had to bend the top of the tube and then thread the bolt just tight enought to keep it from wiggling.

You should beable to just put some washers behind it since your not bending it to such an extreme angle

Alright I'm gonna get the car working tomorrow but i must say the chopping and cutting went well today. I spaced the dipstick bracket with three washers, then i sliced the motor mount bracket and eliminated the front mounting point, so now its just a tiny bracket with 2 bolt holes and big polyurethane motor mount :). As for the cast iron motor mount bracket, i went to town on this thing, I chopped the bottom set of bolt holes out so now it only bolts to the block using the two upper bolts, then i removed the top piece where the two studs are for the motor mount, then i took out the edge that interferes with the exhaust manifold and headstud installation, and last but not least i evened out the side of the bracket where there is a stud where that one piece connects the two brackets. I wish i could post pictures, but basically the bracket is no bigger than it needs to be, i'm still using all three bolts to mount the power-steering bracket, and thats basically the only reason why that bracket is still there. Otherwise i just wouldn't even have it. I just decided that as a daily i'm sure i would hate to not have my power steering.

Thanks for the help guys.

I think the unassisted p/s rack is better because lock to lock is closer together. Just loop your lines together at the rack and see how you like that before you go out and buy a rack. I have the p/s delete on my 99 and they never made a manual rack for this car, and I like it a lot.

Don’t remove the belt to see how it feels without p/s because you will still have the pump connected and that is an obstruction and the fluid won’t move freely through the lines. Use washers to space out the dip stick so you can retain the original bolt in case you ever want to convert back.:dsm:
