One of my friends last winter left my motor outside,no head on it but it was probly sealed..I noticed when it was time to but it in a freeze plug has been pushed out bending the transmission plate :ohdamn:..We drained the water/coolent but must of not got everything.. Didn"t think this was a big problem, got a new freeze plug and I was back in bussness :hellyeah:..I ordered a 1g stock head off of the forem which was cleaned up and in decent shape.. I brought it to a machine shop and they said it was good to go...( i think they were full of S.H.I.T)..I had head studs laying around arp"s which i beleved were the 3-4 time tq them down..:hmm:.. could of been a mistake, but was so hyped to get my feltpro prematurque badass hg on.. Well after everthing the car overheats, in boost basically..outside temps were 30-40 degress, no thermastate, waterpump was changed....I do have a civic rad but I have a really good slimfan 1600cfm"s... could this been the machine shop being shady just taking money and not checking out the head, ive put 1k on the setup and there is oil passing into exshast port 2 and intake ports have oil in them.. valve seals are shot .. this is making me conclude that they didnt mill check surface of the head making the mls not correctly seal?? could it be my arps were streched ?? Or worst of all that freeze plug that i though was nothing maybe have also cracked the block?? car did not smoke just alil blue from steam seals, no oil was mixing into coolent or vice versa.. compression test read 160psi all around... help me out what should i do??

It is very hard to understand you do to very poor sentence structure. As far as what I undersand though. You don't have a thermostat. You need one of these. Some people have good results like this. But your cooling system cannot operate properly. If you weren't having this over-heating issue, you'd never enter closed-loop, which could have been another problem completely. Having no thermostat can lead to coolant not staying in your radiator, in turn not letting it cool. Does it only over-heat at idle, or does it also do it while driving? Have you PROPERLY bled and burped your cooling system? What are you using for an overflow? Do you have a good radiator cap? You're trying to relate the surface finish that the machine shop put on the head to the oil in the intake and exhaust ports, impossible. They are not related what-so-ever. You have good compression, and don't see any oil/coolant being mixed. I am going to assume the head was machined correctly and is sealing. The machine shop must have damaged the valve stem seals upon installation, IF you had them replaced. You have 2 separate issues. Was the block decked? Was it magna-fluxed before decking to ensure no cracks?

If there is no thermastate the car obviously would stay cooler, since coolent is always circulating..The system was blea with a 50/50 mix.. Block was never decked or checked, it was fine last setup before that winter when I discovered there was water in it.. And thank you for noticing I have poor sentence structure, droped out the 9th grade to be the dsm guru :applause:

You guys both have lousy sentence structure, and spelling.

@ Streetperson: So your block sat outside filling with rainwater, and freezing solid. Then you just tossed it in a car without any machine work, and put a machined head on it without any new valve seals?

You dropped out of ninth grade to become a goo what?

Edit: I almost forgot to answer your question: Take the engine to a shop, and have it checked and rebuilt by an educated professional.

ROFL..block was cover in sealed containor.. I was running water threw
the motor that summer instead of antifreeze.. I drained the fluid out before I put it to the side..I guess there was alittle left that pushed the plug out..And for the head the valve steam seals I was told was replaced shortly after I bought the head so I figured I didnt need to change them.. Only thing i was told was the head wasent milled, I brought it to the machine shop and he told me the surface was fine and nothing had to be done..

Sorry, but no. Due to the coolant always circulating it has the possibility to heat soak because it isn't being cooled properly which can lead to overheating.

The thermostat isn't just a part they put in there for no reason. It serves a purpose and needs to be there. It helps regulate temperature and keep it at a steady level.

You would definitely not touch any of my car's if that is how you treat yours.

well I put 10k on my galant vr4 with no thermostat and it ran completely fine.. Car went to boston and back fine and the car also drove to the track and made back to back passes and was fine.. temp never went over 200..I was planning on putting a thermostat back in just kept forgetting since the car never gave me a problem..this is also the same bottem end i had in my galant that im using now that giving me problems

Take it to a reputable shop and having the cooling system checked out. Thermostat is a necessity too.

What's your point? You know it's wrong but since it worked once it should work again? Just plain stupid.

The function of the thermostat can't be argued, and i said possibility of overheating. Not that it would every time.

But fact is fact, the possibility is there, and it's possible that is your issue. If you want to ignore that fact, then no skin off my back, but have fun when you gotta rebuild. :thumb:

thank you, finally a answer that didnt have a wisea.s.s remark

well I took the motor apart, im going to rebuild the head everything new, get the bottem end inspected, and put it back together, the propper way this time therostat and full size rad.. The problem was defenity my stuipity of wanting to rush a build :nono:.. Im going to post up a thread when im done to let everyone know how it comes out.. There was no point of argueing when it was my wrong

Yeah, tuners has enough smart A.S.S people here, I don't need to add to it. :p
Anyway, I recognize you from gvr4.org. It never a good idea to rush a build, but whats done is done. It could be an easy problem the could be sorted out for very little cost. Just go to a shop and ask to have the cooling system pressure tested for starters, or buy a cooling sys pressure tester if you do this kind of stuff a lot. After you get the main problem squared away, put a thermostat in the car and give it a chance at running properly. Good luck.
