possibly buying gst, what's wrong with it?

Okay so a friend of a friend is selling a 99 gst, and he said that all it needs is a new crankshaft because sometimes the car will shut off.

can someone please tell me if this is an expensive fix? or if it's not the crankshaft what is it?

could be a variety of issues. can you be more specific? doesnt really sound like the crank, sounds like a timing or electrical issue depending on when it shuts off. is is random? at idle? could be as simple at your spark plugs not being gapped properly. Then again it could be a busted head from having the timing belt break.

If the body is in good condition (check the strut towers for rust) and you get a good price, it should be worth it. Most of the parts you can find from other members and vendors on this site. most parts are on the cheaper side and you should be able to get all the necessary information to do whatever to this car. so at worst the engines garbage. but you should be able to find the parts to put together a newer one thats better and stronger or just find a used one. In the end, its your call.

thanks mjbean, im not sure exactly what happens im going to go and test drive it, and i'm only gong to be paying 1500 cash body is in great condition, but im going to drive it and see what happens, he said it runs just shuts off sometimes, i think he said at idle it will shut off...

but once i talk with him in person ill post something and ask again
