Possibly a bad turbo?

Hello everyone,
Well I think I have a problem. When I first start my car, one; my oil pressure is at about 75psi and slowly goes down to 15-20psi, and two; my car makes almost like a ticking type of noise. The noise appears to go away when it is fully warmed up however. The only time it makes the noise is when a decent amount of gas is applied. If I can hardly use the turbo while cold it won't really make it I have been noticing. However when I do use the turbo it makes the noise, and yet the car still makes boost and holds it well. So when the car was cold I popped the hood to check it out and when I'd give it a good amount of gas it almost sounded like it was from the turbo. What could it be though I am very confused...
Thanks

If you have excessive shaft play, that "ticking" noise would be the turbine wheel hitting the housing.

This would mean your turbo either needs rebuilt or replaced.

If it was hitting the housing, wouldn't it not pull boost? Btw I didnt get a chance to check before work I am going to check before I leave. Also it goes away after 10min or so of driving, sometimes longer. It's very bizzare

New update:
Well this morning I started my car to a loud knocking sound. This came after taking my car for an hour ride Monday, and to Boston and back from RI yesterday. It ran great both days. This morning its knocking. No leaks still and no smoke. Exhaust note sounds fine, idle was steady at 800rpm. The oil pressure was at 40-50psi slowly going down as it idled. I was talking to a few people and I know think that it is a bearing in the lower end. And that the person before me that had it put thick oil in to quiet the sound, but after lots of driving the oil thinned out to normal the sound came back and worse than before.
Input please? :(

if it is the lower bearing, it will need to be replaced. If it is not replaced it will cause further damage to your car

I will be getting it checked out for sure tomorrow or in a couple days, good thing I kept my civic. I hate people who lie haha... Anyhow, does that make sense and sound like a bearing? Around how much will it run me?

It all depends on the extent of the damage already made by just fixing it with a 'bandaid' with the thicker oil. The sounds of it your lower bearing has caused for your crank to become out of alignment. I am no expert of these dsms, but I have seen a lower bearing failure before and it destroyed the crankshaft entirely.

F*** me really!? It sucks, I just paid $6500 for the car a few weeks ago and have only been able to use it for maybe a full week if that. :banghead:

hope the best for you, if you do an oil change before you take it in, watch for metal shavings in your oil. let us know what was wrong

Well I have very strange news. Yesterday morning I started it to bring it to my buddies shop and there was not even the slightest bit of knock. I let it idle for about 5min and there was no noises/funky smells/smoke nothing. The oil pressure was at 75psi but worked its way down to about 15-20psi when it was warmer. Also whats even stranger is the original noise that sounded like it was the turbo only when it was cold and it started to pull vacuum was completely gone too. It ran really well to the shop. I am completely dumbfounded.
Does anyone know how that could be?
Thanks

The oil pressure thing sounds perfectly normal, at high idle when the car is cold there is going to be a ton of oil pressure. Once the oil thins out and the idle drops, pressure should be around 10-20psi. The tick when the car is cold sounds like lifter tick to me. But without seeing/hearing for sure this is my best speculation.

If the turbo has no shaft play, no scoring on the inside of the compressor cover from evidence of the compressor wheel tagging the cover, and doesn't leak or blow smoke...it's fine. I would check those three things, and since your turbo is still working I would tend to believe that it's probably ok.

Oil pressure is normal at idle when it warms up, mine sees less then 10psi and im not worried at all, as for the ticking, most likely lifter tick... id only be worried if it left a cloud of smoke in the rear view, or its not holding boost.

It wasn't a ticking that happened wednesday though. It was a loud consistent, deep knock. And glad to hear the oil pressure thing is normal haha

You should stop driving it now. If you don't correct the problem, you will certainly cause more damage.

I did stop driving it. I put my honda back on the road haha. I just don't understand how one minute it knocked, then the next it is running great, good oil pressure, no smoke, no leaks, no funky smells nnothing. I am so lost.

Youre now a true DSMer.
Did you check for side to side play? Mine has a lot and has the same symptoms. I just havnt dipped into boost in a few weeks (I work a block away)
You can either swap it out to a tad bigger (T28,14B) or just buy an E316G, all are pretty much bolt in.

The ticking sounds like the lifters to me.

Well I suppose I'm glad to be a true DSMer now LOL, but it wasn't a tick, it was a knock. And I have yet to check for shaft play. I haven't had a chance. I will check soon though. My plan was to eventually get the E316g anyway haha.
