Possible to install Engine to trans dowel pins without removing trans?

Friend of mine just put his 1g awd trans and 6bolt motor in his shell after a long time down. But...he forgot to purchase new engine to trans dowel pins. (I guess they were lost in his shop)

I told him he might be able to loosen all the engine to trans bolts and the top trans mount bolts and slide the tranny out a little without having to removing everything else to put in the dowel pins.

I told him I had to do that to install my starter plate and it worked but any idea if it's possible to put pins in since they only go on the bottom corners of the engine block this way?

it might be possible but it might be more hassle then just dropping the trans

Should be possible, might have to take the driver side motor mount off to get enough room.

The driver side? I am trying to picture how that would help. I just looked under my car and def does look possible. The transfercase might have to be dropped for the rear dowel.

we will try soon as he wants to get it running.

were you guys able to do this with just backing the bolts out? im missing one and am having problems disengaging the clutch so i am going to be installing it to see if it helps out any.

We ended up removing all the mounting bolts, transfer case, downpipe and trans mount and it separated enough to fit dowels in. The back went in a lot of easier as I had to use needle nose pliers for the front.
