im lookin at purchasing a 91 TSI and it has a high idle and runs rich. im just wondering some possible reasons for the rich condition. im goin to try to change the MAF to see if thats the cause. could it be the ECU? HELP ME OUT

How do you know its running rich? Try the Oxygen sensor. Look and see if the blow off valve is vented to the atmosphere. Is it still on a stock fuel system? Is he tuning it?

he told me its running rich. it could be the BOV cuz the tube that runs from the BOV to the intake isnt there, so now that i think about it...thats prolly the problem.

umm...im new to turbo's. how would i go about a boost leak test. LOL i prolly look really dumb but i dont i dont have anyone around here to show me. thanks

Would you happen to be buying the 91 awd from Chris in Matoaka? If so, I think it also need the caps replaced in the ecu.

If they have already leaked onto the ECU, then your probably better off getting a new ECU. Go to www.vfaq.com, search a bit and find the tutorial on a leak test. Its pretty simple.

yea i buyin that. how much would it cost to replace the caps?

Im not sure that is the problem, I havent looked at it. But if it is, any computer repair shop will do it pretty cheap. I normally use ABEC electronics in MIdlothian where the Food Lion and MC donalds are. I was told a couple of days ago that they went out of business from an unreliable source and have gone by to see for myself. If they have, you can go to New or Nearly Computers next to Books A Million at arch rd.

do you think i should just buy one sued from here?...do i need to the exact yr and transmission or just same transmission.?

"Sued from here"? You lost me on that but you would need an ecu with part # md166262. I would get the car and trouble shoot the problem before you start searching for parts. If you need some help with it, let me know. I know a fair amount about these cars so Im sure we could get it figured out without a problem. Plus, Im pretty close to you so that helps.

i meant "used"..just got to typing to fast. yea im prolly going to need some help. this is my first DSM...second if you count my 1.8

yeah like i said it could be just the BOV needing the return tube but it seemed to run better and better the more it was driven. Try that first and then the MAF. Lastly would be the computer. Let me know if you get it going soon and if you have any questions!! G-Luck! :rocks:

Well, problem solved. Im almost disappointed in you Chris. The o2 sensor had 2 cut wires and when the safc was removed, the mas signal wire was never reconnected. Oh well, simple problem with a simple cure. So, did you decide on a hooters day yet?

really are you serious? so the car runs perfect now? dang didnt even look at that. i gotta stop working so much. whats the status on the car now???

as for hooters im good tuesday or wednesday of this coming week just everyone let me know :rocks:

this may be a newb reply, but having a boost leak will cause the engine to run rich?? i have been tryin to figure out why mine has been a bit rich lately, and i know i have a small crack in my exhaust mani, this could be the prob then?

after Kieth left, i took it down the road to see how it ran. did alot better. then when i came to the end of my street and slowed down, it cut off. after i stopped screaming and beating the life out of my steering wheel, i tried to start it again. wouldnt start. walked home, came back in about an hour and it started for me. took it home...parked it. i think its prolly the cracked exhaust mani and turbo housing. im in the process of lookin for those parts used. already checked classifieds but no luck. HOPEFULLY the cracked exhaust manifold is my problem!!!

did u let it cut off or did it do it while under some throttle? go for a drive and see how long it will go. it might have old/bad gas in it...it sat for quite a while and actually did that to me i drove it for like 20 mins parked and let it idle and it cut off and wouldnt start untill it cooled down. get some new gas in it(93oct) and see. does it pull pretty hard now? keep me updated. also glad the car was a easy fix...i cant wait till after school so I can get another DSM :sneaky:

pulls beautifully...i'm glad i bought the car. today im goin to go get some real bolts for the flex pipe and connect it. the one you gave me was too little. easy fix though..im sure advanced has them for less the 2 bucks.

i havent forgotten about your plates ;) im gettin my plates sometime this week so ill brings yours back then. so pretty much all i need now is a used exh. mani and turbo housing. so once i get that i'll be good to go. also, went to advanced today and got exhaust manifold bolts to hook the exhaust. the closest thing i could get was listed under "import". when i got home i tried it and they were too small. you think it would just be easier to go to chester auto parts or something?

the exhaust manifold isnt cracked just the top layer or rust or something looks as tho it is. nothing should be cracked. just go to mitsu for the bolts..when u get the chance bring the plates cool
