Running rich and looking for possible causes

Hey everyone. This is my first post even though I have been using the forum for a long time to find information. So much good information on here I haven't had the need to post until now :)

OK. First some history on the car. I purchased a 95 talon tsi awd from a kid who said the timing belt had snapped and in turn had done the usual damage (bent values, ect). He was going to junk it and I just couldn't bare the thought of another DSM disappearing of the face of the earth so I bought it from him. Took the head off and replaced it with a rebuilt one. Dropped the pan and found the remains of a balance shaft bearing. I eliminated the shafts using OEM parts, replaced the oil pump, timed it, and put everything back together.

It started right up, but ran a little rough with black/blue smoke (rich smelling) coming out the back. I did a boost leak test and found/fixed leaks at the BOV adjustment screw, BISS screw, throttle body shaft seals, and boost gauge tee. I also replaced the front O2 sensor. It seemed to run (pulls pretty good) and idle a lot better after that work, but still seemed to be running rich.

I did a compression test with the following results:
155, 160, 158, 140(quite low)

Trouble codes:
P0141: Oxygen O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank1, Sensor2)
P0443: EVAP system control purge control valve circuit failure

I've searched the forum looking for possible causes and I think it might be the FPR going bad, but I just wanted to get another opinion on it.

Thanks

When my bank 1 sensor 1 was bad I was pig rich and it ran a little rough. Probably the same story with the downstream o2 as well. Id start there.

Im not familiar with the evap code so I cant help you there.

Hey Breezio69, thanks for the reply, but from my understanding the downstream O2 is only used for emissions and doesn't effect the A/F ratio. I could be wrong though. I'll look into the rear anyways.

I'm wondering if exhaust leaks before the front O2 sensor would cause a rich condition? I ran a can of seafoam through the car when I first got it running, and of course it smoked out the neighbourhood, but I noticed quite a bit of white smoke around my exhaust manifold and turbo.

After running that seafoam check your o2 sensors and sparkplugs that stuff can foul them.

I ran the seafoam through before changing my O2 sensor out as I heard that it can foul it. Also put a new set of plugs in.

I'm going to try taking off the knock-off ssqv non-circulated bov (came with the car) and put a circulated 1G bov on and see if that helps.

I noticed today that the smoke and smell seem almost to be more like oil burning than rich. Upon further inspection, I found oil leaking from the edges of the exhaust manifold gasket :S

Where would the oil be leaking from into the exhaust manifold?

I know it might be a bit of a pain but take your exhaust manifold off so you can see if you are leaking oil from the exhaust ports.

I have had and seen similar issues with o2 sensors and oil leaking from the exhaust ports and that's usually a bad valve stem seal.

My number one runner/exhaust port was gooped with oil when i took the manifold off and all that goop went through the turbine housing and into my exhaust and fouled up the sensors.

Just to follow up on this old thread; As far as I know, it isn't running rich, it's just burning a lot of oil. It's leaking through the valve seals and cylinder #1 needs new rings (low compression of 140). Going to be tearing the head off yet again.

The engine had 152,xxx km on it when I got the car. It had a timing belt snap because a balance shaft spun a bearing. The pistons seemed to be alright after valves made contact with them, but I'm just curious if I should be worried about it. Like, should I put in new pistons while I'm in there?
