Porting the oil relief hole with no balance shafts?

A question about cleaning it up after porting, do you guys bring it to a facility with a hot tank/jet wash to make sure it's absolutely spotless especially after I see some pics people sandblasted/painted it? If there's any kind of dirt particles in there it could mean catastrophic engine failure very quickly, and this is the "oil filter" housing not like having dirt in the oil pan which gets filtered out.
 
There aren't many places for particles to get trapped when it's completely disassembled. I just used a can of brakleen and an air nozzle attached to my air compressor. It's been like that for a year or so. I even had the engine apart a few months ago to replace the piston rings(200k miles) and there was no signs of damage from foreign particles.
 
how are the non-turbo oil fliter housings? they've surely got a ton of pressure to deal with. maybe someone has already looked into using one of these or at least the relief valve (or hole diameter)?
 
i picked up an NA-oil filter housing from eBay. I'll post what I find different between the two.
i'm going to look mostly at the relief design and comparing it to the filter housing i've ported.

perhaps the spring rate is different? we'll see ;]
 
Did I port this out too much? I went past where the top of the piston seals. I feel like its going to leak through constantly and cause more problems then help my too high pressure.

My porting bit broke when doing it and I attempted to clean up what it did but think its too far on the top.

Let me know what you think I have another housing here but this one was new(er). I can pick up a new porting bit tomorrow if needed.

i'd try it to see what pressure you'd get but it does look over-done.
let us know how much pressure you end up with - i'm interested to know as i've seen one done that much but never heard any results on it.
 
You didn't go too far, the piston actually seals a little higher than that. If you pull the piston out you can see there is more sealing area above that groove. Mine is ported a little more than yours is, and I have around 20 psi at idle and 85 at 8k RPM's
 
Im a bit skeptic I guess and dont really want to have to redo it all again if the oil pressure is too low. I think maybe tomorrow I will attempt another one with a smaller porting bit and hopefully this one wont break on me. Oh well, just my luck...
 
well, if you want to run it your welcome to (pm me), sadly it was brand new not too long ago... Im going to clean up another one I have here and use that to ensure my oil pressure is not too low and cause any damage. If my motor was older I may be willing to try it all out since id have less to lose but seeing the motor cost a decent amount and its soo fresh im not going to take chances.

I'm still chasing a legit solution for high pressure.... :beatentodeath:

I did get the new N/A 2.0 filter in today - First thing i was able to tell is the oil-refiel-hole is damn near the same size. one thing to note though is the piston inside is different, it has the same diameter but the height is shorter on the n/a piston.

I've decided to go this route (looking at the n/a oil setup opposed to grinding on the housing), I dont think this little of a difference would cause this much drop in pressure - only one way to tell - bolt it on ;]

i'll let ya know what happens. :thumb:
 
GVR4592, maybe its me but im not seeing a wider part at top of the piston for sealing. The top is smaller then the sealing part just mm lower then the grove (Gap) then wide again all the way down it. From what it looks like the oil will flow around/through causing a loss in pressure.
I need to figure something out tho...I re-ported another housing more conservatively and put it on the car. While pressure is lower its still VERY high... I just dont want to blow out my new turbos seals.

Any chance your piston is designed different? Ill take a pic of the parts and post them up.

I would hoenstly try this before porting a new housing...
Remove the piston & spring from an N/A, install them in the turbo housing (i'm using the oilcooler housing). Try that. The piston is different for sure but i dont know about the spring rate. It surely wont hurt your car to try a stock/unmod'ed n/a oil filter housing.

I did my oil filter housing porting again. I ported the shit out of it, and its still hitting 85psi at 5k rpm. WTF?
 
how about using a Nonturbo non cooled oil filter housing? since those blocks do not have oil squirters I would assume there to be some kind of difference in the relief valve that could make things even out with slight porting of the relief.
 
Something to note, perhaps the height of the piston is the difference.
Since it was observed earlier that the housing appear the same, but the pistons were of a different height, perhaps the N/T piston is shorter to uncover more of the releif hole during operation. Since people port towards the top of the piston, mebbe the turbo piston is taller to actually act as a restriction on the hole.
 
^ I agree with you here. It only makes logical sense.

I'm going to look around for a nt filter housing in my spare parts and If I can't find one I'm porting this out.
 
this might sound dumb but if it is infact just the piston do you think we can just order one from mitsubishi and call it a day? if they can be taken out that is...
 
Yeah, you can remove the piston no problem. I don't have a copy of CAPS on this computer but I don't think they would sell just the piston itself, but rather the whole housing. Of course... That's what junkyards are for :D

Here is a screen shot off of CAPS. It's for a '90 style housing. Looks like you can buy each individual part, however I have not priced them.

I am interested on how to lower my oil pressure as well. At idle, its at about 60-65psi, and at about 4krpms, its maxed out my guage at 100. I've already ported the hole, but i guess its not enough.
 
I can't believe yours is that high at idle. I mean my car with 20w-50 in 30 degree temperature will only get to about 25-30psi sitting at 800-1000rpm idle at first startup. Normal driving (slow acceleration and 3000-4000rpm shift, tranny hates cold weather) still won't see it get much above 80psi.
