now my tranny pops out of first gear everytime i start accelerating. it started off once a day and now it happens everytime i start movin. ive searched and everyone is sayin i need a rebuild, but is there any cheap fix that i could do? would replacing the 1/2 gear fork fix this?? other than 1st popping out the rest of the tranny is nice and smooth. thanks alot

Mine did this for the longest time as well. Some people said it was the linkage. others said the tranny... I found when I would put it in nuetral, then second , then push it in first the popping out never happened. maybe it was just a fluke but it worked for me.

This could also happen with a broken engine mount. Happend to my buddy once where his front engine mount broke and it caused the linkage to push the tranny into neutral.

2g cables can't be readjusted, so i dought its the cables. Since it sounds like its just starting it might be the cable bushings I'd replace those with roller bearings. Put in some redline lightweight and syncromesh mixed equally that might help it out a little bit.My trans did the same thing and the cable bushings were basically gone but i think i found out too late (eventually i had to force it into 1st) as I'm putting a new trans in my car right now. But this is a common problem on 2g's I think the intermediate shaft bearings go out and destroyes the 1-2 hub slider and syncro .

^^LOL...Synchros...
Those may be worn to. But you can assemble a tranny with completly worn synchros and it won't pop out of gear. It will be very hard to get it to go into gear, but wont pop out. The gear engagement teeth are on the side of the gear and mesh with the teeth on the sleeve to lock the gear to the shaft. When they wear there isn't enough gear materal left to prevent them from staying engaged. All the synchro does is to make the shaft/hub/sleeve assembly and the gear move at the same speed before the dog teeth engage.

If it progresses, its tranny rebuild time. I've had the shift fork pad wear out which caused the same symptoms. No cheap fix unless cheap is tearing down a tranny to just replace a single worn part. Might as well do an entire rebuild while your at it.
