Poping out of fifth in the highway????

OK my tranny is coming out of gear only on fifth on the highway? after a couple of hard 4th gear runs, i was thinking i was low on tranny fluid, On the way back from the destination point i was just cruising due to problem and after 15 minutes driving it startined doing the same thing? WTF

Does it when the cars just been started and pulled outa the driveway?
Or once the tranny fluid gets moving and gets warmed up?

Could be a number of things.

could be worn / unadjusted linkage, worn shift forks, input gear retainer broken or loose, hell, it could even be dirt between the clitch cover and the engine housing...

This is the number of things I've learned off of people while they are having pop-out problems...

Wait for more people to reply, the other gears are fine correct? Just 5th? Been slammin' it into 5th?

Shift your DSM slow - show love and respect. They need it.

P.S. hes got a "shepard transmission" in his car for addition information...

ok it only does it on the highway, after about 15 minutes driving, from 80mhp on. but it hasnt done it since? WTF .... btw, this tranny is great! it was definatly worth all the money.

that heppened to me when i first bought the car...and low and behold quickly thereafter my trans died...I ended up getting a brand new trans...I don't know what it is, could be the sleeve, could be worn forks, i have NO IDEA...but if its popping out in 5th take it to someone, and find out whats wrong with the gear, get the gear built (either a full rebuild or just stock spec)

good luck...and if I was you (just because of the problems I had) I'd get a full build on the trans, cuz my trans broke TWICE...i've spent more money on the trans then the actual car and its mods...

the same thing happened on my toyota, it would pop out of 5th, and sometimes make a howl noise, i just didnt use 5th anymore, but the tranny locked up on me soon after.

mine did the same thing. i did what defiant posted and that cured the problem. took her for a short spin on the highway and it didn't pop out. TRY this first!!! Mine was just like yours, i was going to miami and it would pop out every 5 mins or so constantly at 65 mph or more. city driving and it never popped out! I am praying it doesn't pop out again! also i would grease the underhood bushings if you have any. go in the car and push the car in fifth fully, then come to the tranny point and see if it goes anymore. good luck bro.

Ok fixed my problem, i was running this tranny without fluid for about a week.. The tranny was dry i remember when i hit a pothole, then the tranny smell after i didnt put to much thought into cause of the truck next to me, but the drain plug wasnt there, so i filled it back up and voila, magic. If its one thing i can say about this shep tranny is that its F***ING HARCORE. .

Dont worry i went threw 3 trannies before i got shep racing to do mine, It was well worth it, Each tranny job cost me a minimal of 800 dollers.
