My friend's car is poping out of 1st gear from time to time. What could be the problem?

I'm guessing it is probably a 1st gen. if it is poping out of gear. The easiest way to fix this is to take the front passenger side wheel off, then take the outer cover case off the transmission after you drain the fluid out. Look at the 2 36mm nuts and see if they are loose. This is a big problem with some cars. They get loose, gears don't stay aligned, and first gear pops out sometimes. My car had this problem before. Also just be sure to check the linkages for binding as well.

I also had this problem with 1st and 2nd gear, I spoke with TRE and they said it was probaly the intermediate shaft bearings (i believe thats what they said it was). I ended up sending to them for a rebuild and sure enough they were right.

If it is just the 2 36mm nuts, then no. Just retorque them to 105lbs. ft.

If it is just the Nuts on the shafts that are loose, make sure you get in there quickly and tighten them. I had my 5th gear do that to me, the nut ended up falling off the shaft and tearing up everything in its path. It took out reverse too.

the mechanic said that the shift fork is bending and causing the problem. Is it serious?

If the shift fork is bending it isn't that serious. If he is sure that is what he has diagnosed it to than it sounds like that will be your problem. Stock shift forks are fairly inexpensive. Around $30 bucks last time I replaced one for a friend but that was a 1g awd. Don't imagine it would be any more difficult.

I had the problem of it popping out of second gear when the throttle was let up. We pulled the motor and tranny, in process of rebuilding, and noticed the front and rear motor mounts rubber was trashed. I'm suspected perhaps that the extra play in the engine from front to back may have had a big part of the popping out of gear problem. We are gonna inspect the guts if the tranny soon to see what wear there is. About 14 Months ago, I put in a ACT 2600 and ACT SL flywheel, and had to have the tranny mount replaced then, the rubber was fine, the bolt side towards the back of the car, and the bolt on bottom were all broke, only the front bolts were holding it on.
