I'm having the same problem as far as 1st gear popping out when realeasing the clutch and I checked the linkage and where it bolts on to the trans it was missing one the the two bolts that holds it in place and the other bolt was loose, so i thighten down the bolt and i found another bolt to replace the one that was missing. now the shifter felt 200% better but it would still pop first gear out, and if i down shift to first it will go in and stay there and i can floor it and let go and it will still stay in gear. now my question is do i need that special washer that Red Sleeper is talking about?
by the way i used Lucas Heavy Duty 80/90 Gear Oil.
